Steering Stem Question

So as I start working on a Front end swap on My 750 K8, I have come across this question: Is the steering stem welded into the lower Tripple tree? I thought that I had read somewhere they were all pressed in, but mine appears to have been welded in.

most of the Honda lower triple clamps are steel and the stem is welded into it.  However, your can grind the weld off and press the stem back out and it can be used again.

if you are going to use the Honda stem in an aluminum lower triple clamp, you will have to find a method of attaching the steel stem to the allow clamp.  Most alloy clamps use steel stems, but they have a "hat" on the bottom of the stem that keeps them from pulling up thru the clamp.  Your options are to weld a nut inside of the Honda stem and then use a bolt with a big washer to hold the stem from pulling up thru the clamp, or drilling thru the clamp and the stem and "pinning" the stem in place.

About your avatar...who peed into your cylinders?  :o
That's about how the Hondaman Special looked when I tore it down. I had to drive the #4 piston-rod combo out with a sledge hammer and pipe by splitting the cases and unbolting the rod, AFTER 6 weeks of soaking in every kind of release agent I could get. The cylinders are now a candidate for a big-bore kit, like 811 or 836cc, because the pitting was so deep.

849cc, eh? I haven't heard of that one before. Is it like an oversize repair kit for the 836cc?

It's the Cycle-X 850 kit. Ken (at Cycle-X) says it's actually 849. But, yeah, you can bore out an 836 to 850. At least that's what they advertise on their website.
