F3 motor teardown (lots of PICS) is it good?
« on: September 11, 2008, 09:06:02 PM »
This is my spare motor that i just bought. Thought id use the best of both motors and practice pulling it apart. Here are some pics. How do the valves look. The tops were not mushroomed but the tappet screws were looking a little worn. this is my firs teardown so any input on what I'm looking at here, good or bad, let me know.

Are any of these valves reuseable

What are those lines are they bad?

The worst looking piston in the bunch

Good work ffjmoore  :)

Valves look normal, but it's hard to tell while they're in the head. The need to be taken out and checked to see if they are bent/worn/burnt.

The 'worst' piston looks like it has some foreign object damage on the dome......likely piston ring bits. Are the rings complete on that one?

The one with the lines looks like it has rubbed the case in the process of disasembly.....not like battle damage? I've not seen lines like that before, they look to organized to be seizure damage but it could be.

All of the rings are there. I wipped it with a towel and most of it came off, the rest feels like it will come off with a wire brush. The lines arent as bad as they look in the picture and judgeing by the fact that they were covered in the blowby staining in them say they have been there for awhile and not getting worse. Ill try to pull the valves tomorrow.

That almost looks like the piston had been help by some kind of wrench. How does that cylinder look? Any score marks?

Got the valves out. How do you measure the slop in the guides? I wiggled them and the moved very little at all. They all measure .258-.259 in. Spec is .2579 and .2567.
pistons

Intake

Exhaust

Are these useable or are they burnt?
The one still has the valve guide on it. Is that the stock kind?

Hmmmmmm...the guide came out after you removed the valve. Not good. Also I think those marks on the piston skirt were caused by a ring compressor (a waffle band type)

Yeah...a good point. Butt points off but that will usually cut into the wall. Interesting. 2 guides sliding out is even  more interesting. ::)

just to clarify. the valve guide didn't slide out still attached to the valve. When i was wiggling the valves out it just came loose and i pulled it up as i was pulling the valve down.
I didn't think they should come out that easy.

Maybe its just the angle of the picture, but does it look like there are two different kinds of valves? The outside set looks to have an indent in the center while the inside set look flat across. It could just be the lighting, too, but it caught my eye.

Right....there is no other way the guide could come out. The guide shouldn't come out of the bore....that's the problem.
