I originally ordered the 3ohm models, then read a bunch of threads, before this one was reworked, (greenspun..others) of which most posts advised the stock 5ohm resistance, sighting several "known" issues that can result>> i.e charging, heating, ect , so I changed my order. I am about to order another one for my K2 and given the response here, I will fire up the 3ohmers.
thanks.

Can you point me to the original link since I am planning on installing a Dyna S over the winter, but would like to keep the stock coils since new coils are more bucks than I (actually my wife) want to spend.

I ran the stock coils with the Dyna S in my 750 for over a year and they worked fine.  I then put in the 3 ohm coils, but to tell the truth, I didn't notice much, if any difference from the stock coils.

There's a Piranha on eBay (UK) right now (starts at £10).

Anyone ever used these?  Are they optical or magnetic?

I think we should take his carbs, strip them down to the last component, throw them all in a bucket and mix them all up.

Pirahna/newtronics are no worse than any other electronic box---totally irrepairable at the side of the road in the dark!!! a Pirahna one has to be OLD now and transistors die with age--same as bikers--. Personally unless you are doing mega miles I prefer points, but then I am used to fitting lots of em so i find it easy.

My mate had a Piranha ignition on his Guzzi, but it never worked right for him, the only bad experience I had with an EI was a "Prestolite" (US made) ignition for a Suzy GS1000, I bought it as NOS, was a cheap looking thing, I fired it up and it ran for about a minute and died, never to work again.

Since then I've only used Dyna and Martek ignitions, and they've been fine. Only time I've actually seen an ignition fail "on the side of the road" (See Biker Horror Stories, Chapt 1, worse fears) was when my mate's new OEM point arm broke in half, this was on the way back from the Bathurst Easter TT about 200 miles from home on a Sunday night, and what can you do when that happens?

Well there was no way to fix a broken points arm, so all we could do was use a spare points plate that I'd brought with me. All that bull about being able to fix points on the side of the road is just that really, bull. If you're worried about your EI failing on a trip, then take a spare points plate (or spare EI, if you've got one, they're just as easy to fit, and the old Marteks even had a "ballpark" timing mark) with you like we used to do. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Marteks must not be made anymore. I tried to find them and so far nothing.

I'm not actually considering puting electronic ignition on either of my bikes as I only do about 1000 miles on each per year and am quite happy with "once-per-year" maintenance cycles.

Bob Wessner - shame they don't make "Fit and Forget" carbs eh?

Oh, they do.  It's called EFI...

I've had the DYNA S ignition with 3 ohm coils on my 400 for 6 years now. Never had a problem with it or with the charging system. I just adjusted the regulator to overcome the resistence for the extra load.
And Fergie when you connect a battery charger to your battery you should allways unplug the leads from the battery, cause you might damage your rectifier.
