"Modular models like this — where the entire front flips up to expose your face — are in vogue only with the AARP set"

Hey, I wear a modular!  >:(   ;D

I've heard of bluetooth bike-to-bike comms units, but apparently they have very limited battery life (<4 hrs), their transmit range is only about 400 ft, and you can only communicate with one other unit.

Bluetooth enabled helmets though?  Bah, I'll stick with my Ipod and earbuds.

Not legal in many states.  Here in Virginia, you are allowed to use one ear.  In nearby Maryland, no earpiece is allowed.  In Washington D.C., there are conflicting laws(go figure).  One states that no earpiece is allowed, another requiring a hands free device for cellphones, either speaker phone or earpiece.

Maybe not earpieces, but what about earplugs?

Seems stoopid, but no mention of earplugs.  I guess the idea is to not have something that emits sound in one or both ears.  I blame rock-n-roll.

My one and only brush with that law was when I was in high school in the early 70s, when CB radio was getting popular.  I had rigged a Telex one sided headset w/ boom mic to the CB and a cop pulled me over.  Long before mobile data terminals in police cars, cops carried a book with the law in it, and luckily, he looked it up before he started writing a ticket.  Dodged that one. ;D
