Carvers Legacy...aka an old Dirtbike and scooter come home
« on: August 28, 2008, 04:07:09 PM »
Well the trip i was looking forward to and dreading at the same time has taken place. Spike and i made the trip to carvers former home and brought home two bikes from the collection. An old Jawa scooter and the CZ Yellow tank Motocross bike i mentioned in another thread looking for info on the model. The Scooter is a 1960 50 cc but due to its engine not being all there we will probably be replacing it with a 125 cc pit bike engine since it is a similar design. From what i could see the Motocross bike is mostly there except for hand controls, wiring harness, down pipe for exhaust and intake adapter.  However the friend that made this possable thinks theres probably still some of the parts hidden amongst the piles of parts sitting around the old work shop. There may possably be a second CZ Dirt bike joining my collection as well later on. But i will add details on that one when the time comes. For now..the pictures...

The scooter

The Motocrosser

Hmmmm seems the motocross bike has a suprise on it in the form of an electronic racing ignition....

Sorry about the dark images guys i do not have a photo editing program on this new computer yet.

From the looks of it the answer would be yes. Theres the fly wheel that's shown in the pic and the rest of it is on the side cover in a red casing that says Motoplat made in Spain.

Chris, you aren't going to believe this. :o That Jawa scooter is a later version of the one that I have that my Dad reworked to look like a small motorcycle instead of a scooter. ;) Here's a photo of one that is LIKE the one my little bike started life as.

If I can find a picture (or pictures) of my little Jawa, I'll post it (or them).

And, "NO!" you can't have my engine either. :D

lol wasnt gonna ask bill...the scooter is spikes lil project. The Motocross bike is mine. The motocross bike used to be dads years ago. He never rode it but had wanted to...then he sold to carver now today the bike comes full circle and returns to me. Im probably going to suspend all work on other bikes till the CZ is running again and able to tear the trails up once more. Just debating stripping it right down to its chassis and having the frame powdercoated in black along with get the tank checked out before getting it either painted in yellow or have it powder coated in a simular yellow. I know it isnt factory finish but im not going for full resto either im building the bike to ride and i want to make sure the finish will handle the abuse of off road. Hopefully i can have the stock tank decals remade by a local shop.

This site offers a few nice parts for the bike and im tempted to use a few of them on it in its rebirth...

http://www.crhighperformance.com/products.html

what i think would look sharp would be going with this black plastics kit and having the stock tank redone with new decals as well as keeping the aluminum number plates that carver made for it..

The combination of parts would allow me to make this old warrior my own...but also give a nod towards Carvers efforts with it with the seat he redid and the aluminum number plates.

here are the shocks i was looking at running..

The alloy shift and brake levers would be nice as well..with a lil luck all those parts will find their way onto the old bike...

Basicly if i go the route of using these parts i would be building the bike as a period correct Motocross bike and restoring it to what its ment to be and wont be afraid to show some newer MX bikes how it was done. I hinted at a possable second bike and what that one is is a 1974 CZ Model 980 Red Frame 250 cc. If i buy the red frame i will be able to start a legacy of my own with it and just rebuild the Yellow tank to enjoy.

heres what the Red frame would look like fully assembled...right now its just a bare chassis with the front forks and the rear swing arm..

Hmmm it looks like the ignition isnt all there after all...appears theres parts to two different systems on the bike. Guess i will probably wind up stripping both parts off and installing an entirely different ignition on this thing.

Well this is a lil bit of a twist i sure as heck was not expecting to have happen. Turns out that Dave Bickers actually lives in my area of the country and sitting on my dresser at the moment is a custom tool he made for the 125 cc CZ motocross bike. Im going to have to return that piece of history back to the friend that now owns Carvers collection but he loaned it to me so i can swap out the ignition on the bike. Turns out that carver had waited on this tool to arrive before he could continue on the rebuild on my bike. Now i have the tool to swap out the ignition once i get a new one for the bike..Heres another bit of interesting info...turns out that Mr Bickers knows something about my bike...so im seeing what i can do about getting in contact with him.

For those of you who do not know who Dave Bickers is. He was the 1960 European 250cc Motocross champion. Mostly known for riding the Greeves brand of bikes. As im researching info on the Cz im also looking up info on him since there is a very good chance that he was either the tuner for the racer that had my bike back then or it could very well be a bike he raced himself.

As for the Cz itself progress has been made in getting it closer to operational. Turns out there were two brand new pistons for it in the parts at carvers place. No luck in locating the original hand controls but oh well i was debating buying new parts there anyways. I may need to get the carb intake adapter made since i cannot seem to locate it in the parts supply. I also now own the 74 Cz 250 cc redframe i mentioned in an earlier post. This bike doesnt seem to have any history so im not so nervous about building it into something of my own. The Yellow tank im just going to rebuild as if it had been crashed in a race and was being reassembled to go out on the track again using modern parts that still look correct for the machine.

Here is a pic of the redframe in its current state..

Also..here is a glimpse at my CB750 project....

Yes before anyone asks..it is a dirtbike frame...what do i have planned you may ask? Think dual sport bike on steroids. I plan on cutting and modding the frame as required to handle the engine. At the most i have to rework the lower half of the engine cradle and widen it at the rear pivot point and it may require a bit of lengthening not sure till i get the engine to the shop and have it beside the frame to see what needs to be changed.
