There is a difference between leather jackets and riding leather jackets. Riding leather has longer sleeves, cuffs that close tightly, a collar that doesn't flap in the wind, and a waist that can tighten up as well. And all true riding leather is cut for comfort in a riding position. In other words, standing, looking at yourself in a mirror at the store, it should be uncomfortable. Find a way to assume a riding position. A removable liner is a good option also. And then there's built in body armor.
Now that having been said, here's my 2 cents. I have a rather lax view on protection, leather, and keeping warm. Well, maybe not so lax on the "warm". While I used to sell riding gear at a dealer some years ago, and realize what can happen versus what will happen, I tend to shy away from leather. First, if the liner isn't all that thick, the cold will conduct right on through to you. And winter riding gear is better at keeping you warm than leather. I know what some will say. Leather will protect you from the road. While that may be true, that you might go down and need the leather. But one thing is for sure. You ride in the winter, you will get cold. Might versus will. Something to ponder
