That can't be safe  :P I don't have "riding" gear only the standard clothes. I've tried windbreakers, and they turned me into a parachute. Another problem when I put on my Carhartt jacket and leather gloves it's warmer then anything else I have because it's such a dense material, but the wind slides down the sleeves it defeats the whole get up. Sweaters just suck. The funny thing is it's only 60F* out and I'm speeding up to hit the next patch of sunlight down the road  ::)

Anyone know of some cheap gear to keep warm? I'm not sure if riding gear is designed like this but ideally something where the jacket has a loop near the hands that goes over your thumb so the wind cant blow down my sleeves and then throw some gloves on top of that.

My legs never really get to cold so I think some long johns and jeans would take care of that.

BTW sorry if there is a lot of post like this I could only find one from 06 and didn't want to bump it.

You could try a jacket with cuffs - my Carharrt Jacket is great in the Fall and has tight cuffs to keep the wind out. Failing this I have a zip-up sweater that also has tight cuffs...warm as well. Failing this you can try some climbing/hiking clothes. A thin base layer (like a thermal top - I have an excellent Hely Hansen one for winter activities - very warm! - its skin tight and no chance of cold drafts...)....at the end of the day its all about layers.

If you want a jacket with a thumb loop then the only one I know (and have) is a down parka jacket...but then you`ll look like the Michelin Man  ;)

Thermal top gets my vote:

Notice the cuffs  ;)

You can find it cheaper if you search the net.

Good luck
Andy

Motorcycle gloves with a longer gauntlet can cinch down over a jacket sleeve and keep the wind out.  There are a lot of winter gloves on the market.  That and a good leather jacket should keep you warm down into the 40's.

Or move to Texas.  It's 95 degrees here except for that week or two of fall/winter/spring.

A good leather jacket is really an amazing thing. I tried a few of the "cheap" jackets and they are nowhere near as good, all they did was give me problems.

I got a Joe Rocket Atomic 2.0 a couple years ago, $120. Liner for colder weather, six zippers to ventilate. The nylon cut the wind very well. I've been looking for some gauntlet gloves to help stop any up the sleeve drafts. I think this is the current model, $135, and it looks like it has zipper sleeves too:

There is a difference between leather jackets and riding leather jackets.  Riding leather has longer sleeves, cuffs that close tightly, a collar that doesn't flap in the wind, and a waist that can tighten up as well.  And all true riding leather is cut for comfort in a riding position.  In other words, standing, looking at yourself in a mirror at the store, it should be uncomfortable.  Find a way to assume a riding position.  A removable liner is a good option also.  And then there's built in body armor.

Now that having been said, here's my 2 cents.  I have a rather lax view on protection, leather, and keeping warm.  Well, maybe not so lax on the "warm".  While I used to sell riding gear at a dealer some years ago, and realize what can happen versus what will happen, I tend to shy away from leather.  First, if the liner isn't all that thick, the cold will conduct right on through to you.  And winter riding gear is better at keeping you warm than leather.  I know what some will say.  Leather will protect you from the road.  While that may be true, that you might go down and need the leather.  But one thing is for sure.  You ride in the winter, you will get cold.  Might versus will.  Something to ponder

Very true 333!  I ride with my thick leather, throw on a hoodie if it gets cold, and I am upgrading to gloves like tsflstb suggested.  I am going waterproof for sure!

I think for you the quick/cheap fix would be to get the longer gloves.

I was looking at Overstock.com, they have these gloves. I was also suprised at the number of bike books and other stuff. Here is a link to the gloves.  http://www.overstock.com/Sports-Toys/Cold-Weather-Leather-Gauntlet-Glove/2947858/product.html

I have the same jacket as Kevin D and I love it. I rode to work today (42 miles) with that jacket, full face HJC helmet, MSR motocross gloves and a sweatshirt (the liner was not in the jacket). It was 52 and the only thing that got cold was my neck under my chin.

With the liner in the jacket I will ride into the high 30's

I also wore a back pack on the bike today for the first time, to put my lunch in on the way there and put the jacket sweatshirt and gloves in for a very nice ride home (82deg)

Back in the eighties, I found ski overpants that zipped over my jeans, and had elastic cuffs to seal up onto my Red Wing boots.  They were quite insulative and the tight weave shed wind chill very well.  I also had a leather fleece line bomber jacket.  The only drawback was the collar would flap on my helmet in the breeze.  The bates gloves/gauntlets would come back to cover the elastic sleeve cuffs and the air would simply transition to the leather sleeve of the jacket.  The last bit of weather seal was a scarf around the neck.  The wool ones were too itchy, but an acrylic one was pretty comfortable.
The setup worked pretty darn well for keeping out drafts.

Today, I'd probably look for snowmobile wear were I in the same situation.

cold weather? the trick is layering and having a windproof outer like a light rain jacket. If it gets stuffy/clammy, then leave it partially open.

you can also buy glove liners and a balaclava when the sun goes down and it gets extra chilly. Trust me, I hate cold weather and i'd rather ride in rain than anything below 50.

I agree that as long as you "seal up" around your neck, waist and cuffs it helps tremendously as there is no flow of air inside your jacket. A scarf, good tight waist and the longer gauntlet gloves will pretty much do the trick.

Newspapers also work really well as a makeshift measure. Especially on the legs.

Wanna know a little secret? Allegedly a lot of Police riders here in the Uk wear womens tights under their riding gear during the winter! According to reliable sources in the forces, womens' tights are guaranteed to keep your legs warm in winter riding. Allegedley.
Just dont have an accident and be taken to A & E, for obvious reasons.
Hmmm, I wonder who's knocking loudly at my front door now? What are all those cop cars doing in front of my house??
Hey, I said "Allegedly"!!

Last year I got a set of Comfortech long johns.  Light weight, thin, fit like tights, and really warm.  Much better than regular long johns.  And they aren't those, uh, feminine tights.  #1 on a dedicated motorcycle jacket with armor.  If you don't want leather there are fabric jackets with windproof, waterproof liners.  Just layer a shirt and sweater underneath.  A balaclava is invaluable when riding in temperatures below 40 F above.  It will keep your neck and head warm.  Mine came from a motorcycle dealership.  I have two - one light weight, one heavier.  Winter gloves with gauntlets keep wind out of your sleeves.  Someone suggested a light rain suit.  That's a good call, especially the pants.  I have worn a snowmobile suit in the past on cold weather rides.  It worked pretty well cutting the wind and keeping me warm, but probably doesn't offer the protection of leather I you hit the pavement.  In the end, I've found nothing that blocks the wind as effectively as leather.

It's still 90 degree weather down here.  Just yesterday I saw a crotch rocket rider shirtless.

Thanks for putting things into perspective that it is cooling off everywhere else in the world.

I have also heard, many times actually, about the uhh... "women's tights" as a possible solution.

I never knew what cold was until I got out of Arizona... pikes peak at midnight "informed" me of what cold is.  :-X
