Occupation in the Real World?
« on: September 12, 2005, 08:09:47 PM »
I don't think I've seen this posted in the archives, but would anyone care to share in generalities what they do for a living-
I thought it would be interesting to see if we actually have rocket scientists or brain surgeons here. (I bet we do)
I'll start-
I'm the service guy for a small company that sells electronic measuring devices (flow, level etc.)to the water and wastewater industry-
Anyone else care to share?

I am a Realtor, investor and recently sold my real estate business and have declared myself retired.  For the next 2 weeks I will be a Top Dog-Dog Washer! - Helping the pets rescued from New Orleans -half way there tonight.

Check out my blog:http://www.katrinapetrelief.blogspot.com/

I think I'll plan on volunteer work at least 2-4 weeks a year-I'm currently on a 1200 miles trip from Denver to Louisiana to help the animals abandoned in New Orleans.  Really enjoying the trip -the US is beautiful by car!

Would anyone care to invest in a growing company? I'm up 100 to 200% per year since 2001.

When in Europe when you ask someone what they do, they tend to answer, snow ski, hike, mountain bike etc.
We North Americans tend to answer how we make money. Something to ponder.

My answer when asked now is.......fixing bikes and Kite Boarding.

Semi-Retired 10 years ago at 34.
Luckily still webmaster of a going concern http://www.world-playground.com

Some day the web will crash and I will have to start another company :'

I thought this was the real world?

I Retired from the Army in 2001, work as a defence contractor and do a little Army Reserve (National Guard) work on the side to supplement my Ebay addiction. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I work with computers (that's what my mother says when she's asked). It's hard to describe a job like mine in a big international company. Those of you who work for international companies know that the boundaries are very blurry. Basically I spend my day answering emails, generating documentation, covering my ass in case somebody screw up something, pretending I'm working hard, using internet during work hours -like now-. At the beginning it can be discouraging, but when you understand that it is the name of the game then it suddenly gets even distracting!!!

In my leisure time I do many things: ride my bikes, fix and keep them in top shape, tinker with electronics, play electric guitar, jog and ride my mountain bike, have a stroll with my wife and daughter, have a espresso, I even work as a freelance journalist for a spanish magazine writing about classic bikes. Probably the most entertaining activity I do in my leisure time is advocating against gun possession rights and pissing off gun owners  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA  ;D Ridiculizing Aussies whose name starts by Te and ends by Rry is also a rewarding activity. BTW, have you received the magazines?

I have given up trying to make a living out of things you enjoy. I have realized that, when your salary depends on it, you will have to do things that you don't like, even in a field that you like. The only way to do just the things you like when you want is when it is a leisure activity.

I agree. I work at a big software company. I used to like working with computers ... I still enjoy the problem solving aspect of designing and debugging software, but I no longer enjoy sitting in front of a computer for 14 hours at a time. Unless I'm on ebay looking for parts :)

Goodmorning Gang,
In their real world I'm a junior accountant for an international advertising company. I don't like it but it gets the bills paid and my addictions alive!
In my real world, I ride/drive and take care of my addictions CB400F & 1976 TOYOTA CELICA. I play guitar, photograph and draw anything that catches my attention from the moon & stars to things that others might not even look at. My real love is sailing. One day I plan on getting a sailing boat and sailing around the world.
Hey it's nice to dream. After all they keep us smiling and going down to the next intersection in the road.
Have a nice one, Vagelis.

There has been a thread about this before - someone else here worked for Nortel Networks (aka Northern Telecom) in Europe (was it Raul?)

I was Operations Director for European Order Management & Logistics. (That means that half my people processed orders while the other half drove around the country/continent in white vans)

Left in 98 and set up on my own in the Project Management business - currently working in a UK Government office 4 days per week on an Oracle application. Fridays I work with my neighbour who is in the warehousing business. I do his accounts, tax and chase late payers (which is everyone nowadays - especially the big boys)

Q.  Does anyone else have "White Vans" outside of UK and the eponymous "White Van Man"?

Yes Steve, it was me. I worked for Nortel a couple of years in 2000.

Vagelis, are your Evangelios Nitzios from Greece? I remember you from the old forum, you had a nice CB750 police bike. You should post it in the member pics section.

Working for a company that makes spray equipment; Tool Maker, machinist, EDM programmer, machinery builder: hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical, and trouble shooter.  Work with AutoCad quite a bit (taking Inventor class this week), manage our departments' website, team leader for the company's Emergency Services.  On my "off" hours, I'm the Deputy Director of Emergency Services for a small Chicago suburb, and in my "spare" time, I mess with my two '76 750F's.

I am a bank credit analyst. I may be part of the reason there are so many overpriced Harleys on the road. Used to restore Harley panheads until I relized that you can by a brand new antique with a warranty. Sold the whole bunch for more than it was worth to some "Hell's Accountant" that is using them for decorations. Had a CB550 in '75 and decided it was time for something to ride rather than wrench. Have not regretted my decision.
