For my day job, I'm officially known as a "Technical Service Engineer" for DuPont Plastics. In short, I assist customers in the design and molding of our products and help them troubleshoot any problems. I mainly do car parts, but I have done some motorcycle parts too (We knock Harley but they do give us a lot of business...). The job involves some travel, which has enabled me to see parts of the USA I've never been to before. I've been there since 1998 when I started as a co-op student while working on my Mechanical Engineering degree.

As for home life, I'm married (wife rides too) and have 2 goofy cats. I enjoy pretty much any kind of mechanical repair, so I have an extensive garage/shop. The garage is mainly full of antique outboard motors and parts, which are my main hobby (well, before I fell for bikes anyway ::)) I also like helping other folks get stuff running and I'll sometimes even pay Bob Wessner a visit to help him grapple with his carburetor issues.... :D

G'day all,
I did my apprenticeship as a diesel mechamic with the Royal Australian Air Force & got discharged in 1978.
I bummed around working on trucks, driving trucks & coaches & then landed a job as a heavy vehicle Inspector with the Roads & Traffic Authority.
Got sick of living away from home for 3 weeks of every month so I joined State Transit (public buses in Sydney) as a driver.
I'm now an Inspector working the graveyard shift. Basically I drive around aimlessly all night in a company vehicle and do bugger all.
Occasionally this changes as I have to sort out any situation that affects our services (accidents, assaults, etc)
Leisure time is spent riding my bike (s) & drinking copious amounts of the finest beer ever brewed by Dr Reschs.

I'm "Manager, Billing Operations" for Telus Mobility - a large (5 million customers) mobile phone carrier in Canada.  In a nutshell my team makes sure all our invoices get generated properly, printed and mailed.  We also support our 'Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence' area.

Best company to work for.  Lots of time off, other motorcycle enthusiasts, great environment all around.

I restore historic houses.  Don't ask me to put in a new marble counter top in your 1973 split level home!  I've been called a snob when it comes to old houses (and motorcycles), but you have to draw the line somewhere.  Most of my work is in the Mid-Atlantic region form New York to Virginia, and I specialize in pre Civil War and Revolution era properties.  I just finished Lincoln's summer residence where he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation.  Take a look:

     http://www.lincolncottage.org

Now I'm staying home putting an addition on my house and just about to finish my shop(!!!) in back.  Oh yeah, and keeping house and chasing after my 2 1/2 year old...NO, YOU CAN'T WATCH MOTORCYLCE MOVIES ON THE COMPUTER!

'lo All,
I used to be a carpenter down in Nashville, TN - I moved here to Saint Louis about five years ago to get a master's in architecture...since then I've gotten a job here doing historic restorations on some of these lovely brick boxes we have in abundance here...

Just recently set up a black and white darkroom in my basement with a school chum - we turned out our first decent prints last night!

I "work" for a small city government agency. In real terms, this means inventive ways of using my sick leave (took the day off today for physical therapy), gossiping with coworkers, and taking long lunches to go to the gym. Gotta love a union job.  In real life I box, cook, knit, wrench/ride my bike, and go to school full time, studying to become an ESL teacher.

What? No mechanics around? I can't believe it....  ;D

That supports my theory. You either have a job or a hobby, no activity can be considered both though sometimes you can enjoy your job or get bored with your hobby.

Otherwise, how many of you use internet to register and chat in forums related to your profession? And if you do, I bet you do it as a way to contact prospective customers or business opportunities.

Building Inspector (1 man show) for 3 small/rural municipalities. Reviewing drawings, issuing permits, conducting inspections and issuing orders.  Challenging, intersting and usually fun and a fair bit of driving at times. Somedays, I get people really p/ssed off at me (part of the job).

Well when I have to work to pay the bills I am a Portrait Photographer. Fun work but big stress. I mean no one really looks as good as thier photos of them do. Brides are the hardest. Irrational, emotional, semi-unreasonable. Somethimes I feel sorry for the groom.

www.reedsburg-photography.com

This business is run out of my car. Location portrait photography. I was told that it couldn't be done but for the last few years we have been proving them wrong. Keep in mind I have no actual studio nor do I intend to do so. Besides studio portraits suck.

I was an automechanic for 15 years. I hate cars now. Like bikes. Better use of my tools.

Hoping to start building my first custom chop this Christmas. With any luck I can find a market for custom 750 four chopper frames??

Dang it all Terry, you beat me to it------again.

I work at what I've done for the last 40 years--I design automatic fire sprinkler systems for a design-build construction company.  I started out as a draftsman working with paper and pencil.  Now I'm an engineering technician, using Autocad on the computer.  When people ask me when I'm going to retire I tell them when I no longer like my job, but  every new project is still like Christmas morning.

My hobby is remodelling our house.  We've been in it for 25 years and I've been remodelling it for 24 of them.  Current project is adding a second floor and front porch roof--doing all of the work myself.

My passion is motorbikes (leaving personal relationships out of the equation, of course).

I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

My current occupation (and has been for the last 19 years) is in law enforcement.  I worked the road as a patrol officer up until about 6 1/2 years ago (when I got promoted to sergeant).  During that time I worked all the patrol divisions at my agency plus did a 2 year tour as a narcotics officer with a local task force.  After my first promotion I was in charge of our courts/transport (prisoner) division.  When I was promoted to lieutenant I was the shift commander for night shift patrol.  Recently I transferred to corrections and am the shift commander for the night shift in the jail.  And yes, I still enjoy my job.  I do have a background in auto mechanics from many years ago and this has proved very beneficial for working on my bikes.  I just love turning a wrench (which is like therapy; a huge stress reducer).

One of these days though, when I grow up...   ;)

Hello All -

My real life is spent in Houston's best loved independent record store, the Sound Exchange.
All my friends hate me because I get to...well...hang around in a record store for a living.
I'll use the term "living" loosely here, as the pay is awful, but since my business partner and
I purchased the place about 5 years ago, business has gone steadily up. Our business
consists of buying and hopefully selling records, cds and turntables. In this way
I get to work out my gearhead knowledge refurbishing second hand turntables. Anybody
need one? Let me know!
If you  are ever in Houston, come see us @ 1846 Richmond Ave.
Free time such as it is (small business owner, always on the clock!!) is spent
wrenching on my '73 CB500 ratfe racer and my other love, a '71 Buick Riviera.

keeping music evil,
Kevin Bakos (number 13)

I don't reside in the real world, but I do visit it on a daily basis.
I sell specialty cheeses at Whole Foods Market, go figure.

Number13,
I don't need another turntable, but I could use a new stylus for my Marantz 6100.
