Carb Cleaner Dip in a Giant Bucket
« on: September 08, 2008, 10:29:28 PM »
Last time I was at AutoBone picking up my favorite caustic chemical - carb cleaner - I noticed they sold for $20 a one gallon paint-bucket esque jug of carb cleaner. Although I didn't look closely, it looked like the idea was that you would pry off the lid, dump your parts in, and leave them... overnight?

Has anyone ever used this and does it take much of the elbow grease out of the cleaning process?

Thanks,
Adam

yes, and yes. it's nasty stuff, but gets the innards clean when nothing else will. it has a basket inside for ease of part dunking.

+1  had my little bucket for 20 years and it still cleans the inside of jets like nothing else with an overnight soak.  All carb cleaners I have used are worthless for anything but verifying flow through passage and rinsing off a messy exterior.  I am trying some from 3M soon and I am hoping it works better

I just bought a can of it and used it on my TX750 carbs, but I left them in there a little too long. And everything had a silver slime on it. Not sure what it was/is maybe lead? And it built up so much pressure it blew the lid off  :o, but yea it works!

Just keep in mind that carb disassembly is a must with these products.  Nothing rubber or plastic will survive properly in the typical carb dip.

I have a can of this stuff, works great and on more than just carbs.

After a while crap builds up in the bucket from cleaning nasty parts, run the fluid through a strainer into a different container and wipe the rsidue out of the bottom of the bucket.  Re-fill and you're good to go for another long while.

Works great except won't dissolve the white powdery residue that collects inside the bowls, dissolves the gunk and other residue.
After an overnight soak, rinse with water and blow out the passages with compressed air.

IIRC, called Berryman carburetor dip.

Of course... which brings me to my next question. In my 350F carbs the little inner slide guide is plastic. It's not removable. No dipping for 350F carbs?

you could always dip in simple green instead.

I've noticed Honda carbs do this if they're left in for very long.  On the plus side, the instructions say to leave it in for 15 minutes.  It's strong stuff.  Wear gloves or be prepared to shed a few layers of skin for the next week.

All things considered, I'm probably going to try some of the slower products because of the way it eats our carbs if left too long.
