Topic: Restoring my first bike (honda '82 CB650SC nighthawk) missing 1 critical part

I'm restoring my very first motorcycle ever, and I'm almost finished. I bought my CB650SC nighthawk from a guy who originally bought a junkyard lot filled with motorcycles. This bike was his last one and he peiced together what he could(which really wasn't much). I recently bought the exhaust which im working on touching up, as well as the seat. Then I bought the gast tank, side panels, and seat cowling(matching set) from a guy who was parting out a similar bike. It's really coming together quite nicely, an I'm enjoying building this thing from the ground up. My current position is at a stand still. Let me put it this way, I have no carbs. I was wondering if any of you guys knew any sort of place to get refurbished or used carbs? I seen a few places online that sell refurbished carbs but are all like $1000 dollars, and I don't nearly have the kind of cash to throw down on one part. I've been to all the junk yards in my area, and still have had no luck. I guess a btter question would also be if anyone knows of any other compatible carbs. I wasn't sure of the year cycle for the parts on this bike, like if carbs off of an '81 would work on an '82. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. The thing that gets me is that I've gone so far from the start that I don't really want to stop and now I'm stuck.

I think 650 carbs fit all 650's I could well be wrong but I have 2 650 bikes and one has cv (constant velocity) carbs and the other older mechanical carbs, I would say they were interchangable.

The options have widened a bit for carb options I guess.
You can run GPZ600 carbs.

You probably have a CV head(almost 100% sure).
As long as your bike has a '82 motor to go with that '82 frame at least.

The '85 GPZ600 carbs I have are less than 1/8" off from the stock cb650 carbs spacing.
I do have a CV head lying around(in a sad state of dis-repair I might add) and using the stock cb650 carb isolators I was able to mount up the GPZ carbs without a problem.



and yes, ANY(added)CV SOHC cb650 carbs will interchange with any SOHC CV cb650 motor.
Notice I mentioned SOHC? I haven't been able to get ahold of a set of DOHC 650 carbs(yet) to check the spacing.

Sorry I meant any CV set of carbs will swap with any CV cb650 head...

However...

YES a CV cb650 set of carbs will fit on a mechanical head cb650.
I have done it.(not ran it, but fitted them up)
I didn't use the stock cb650 isolators, and thats the 1 reason they worked with the older mechanical cb650 head.

I used '85 kawasaki ninja carb isolators, and the alignment was not perfect, but they fit.
(just about identically as the '85 kawasaki ninja carbs on my bike at the moment fit )
I'm not saying it's a dead nutz lineup, but close enough that the '85 kawasaki ninja carb isolators can compensate.


I would prefer a CV head, so I could use the stock cb650 isolators though.
I think the kawasaki ninja carb isolators with the jog to them cannot be benificial to airflow, compared to the straight bore of the cb650 carb isolators.
But the extra mm's to the bore can't hurt...

I'm betting CV carbs will fit on 79 head, the rubber boots might be a #$%* to fit but I'm sure they would go on, was looking at doing that to my 79 if I can't get the performance I want from the mechanical carbs.
Not sure if 79 would fit on later model head, probably not.

The carb spacing is way different between the mechanical carbs and the CV carbs.  I've never heard of anyone successfully getting them to fit.

With stock 650 boots it almost can be a force fit...I was never successful with my attempts with stock cb650 boots putting on the cb650 cv carbs..
And Mechanical cb650 carbs on a CV head... I can't remember if I have tried that swap yet.
It probably would using the '85 kawasaki ninja carb boots.



I wish I could get a list of the diameters, offsets and angles made for various bikes carb isolators.
It would really open up carb options for the 650.
Not only that but give (possibly cheaper) alternatives for the carb isolators.

Now you have.
Without the '85 kawakasi carb isolators, it would not work though.

I'm doing the same thing and having a hard time finding a set of side panels.  Sorry to jack your thread but do you know of anyone else who might be parting out a bike?
