68 Degrees and 26 MPG
« on: September 10, 2008, 07:04:20 PM »
Double wammie...

Went for a 100 miler after work today.  Sun was out and the temp in my car read 72 degrees at 4 PM - the home thermometer read 68 degrees.  I put on my a long sleeve shirt over two t-shirts.  Then my mesh riding jacket w/o the liner (MISTAKE #1).  I did a long loop and by mile 50 the temp was dropping and now the sun was at my back as I headed West on the way home.  The temperature on the country roads dropped fast and in the shade, (lots of it) it was much cooler.  Shivers set in 30 miles from home.  I was doing 60 and tucked in low to get some engine heat and avoid the wind blast.  I rode hard and fast and the result was really poor gas milage.  I figure that I got around 26 MPG, give or take (I know I am running a tad rich).  This Hot Rod engine is thirsty, especially at high RPMs with my gearing.   Oh yeah, clubman bars suck on longer rides, hands start to go numb quicker when the weather is cool, and the neck gets a bit stiff.  No wheelies or triple digits today, but I did slide the rear tire a bit on a few tight left turns (I love that feeling).  In 5th gear at 5000 RPM I cracked the throttle (to pass a loaded alfalfa truck - in a passing zone) and it pulled hard just like in 3rd!  Runs real nice in the cold, dry air.  Now I need to figure out the best way to lean this fuel system out and make some more mad power.

GO AWAY SNOW AND COLD!  Can you see the Hot Rod wants to run...
