AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
« on: April 09, 2005, 02:18:01 PM »
(long string of dirty expletives!!!)   >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

So I blew off work yesterday to make sure that my 650 was back on the road by Monday.  I spent the entire day rebuilding the carbs (that I took apart 6 months ago) and this morning there they were, correctly assembled and ready to go.

Time to put them in -- you know what a #$%* that is.  I used some cord to tie the airbox back to make extra room -- it was going pretty well and I WAS being careful of the bleeping stupid PLASTIC choke lever.  I was looking right at it, and trying to make extra room for it.  But, there just isn't alot of room.  I broke it.  >:( >:( :(

Some of you might remember I wrote about breaking this bleeping stupid plastic piece of bleep on the greenspun site, when I took the carbs OUT.

I have been looking for one for quite a while, like 6 months.  Honda doesn't sell them anymore, unless you buy the whole carb assy -- at least that's what they told me.  I wrote David Silver about it as well.  I thought of buying a set of carbs from Ebay just for this part, but they sell for quite a bit.

So a few days ago I set out to fix the part.  I had superglued the three pieces together a while back, and even drew up a replacement part at work on my CAD tool, thinking I might have one made out of steel.  But someone on the forum had repaired theirs so I thought I'd give it a try.

I was going to fiberglass it, but the fabric I had was too loose a weave -- so I drilled a few shallow holes thru it and used some JB weld.  I seemed pretty sturdy, and I actuated the choke with it many times.  In fact, the skinny end of it worried me a bit so I reinforced it with 4 holes and some bailing wire  ::)  not kidding.  If you saw it, you'd think I was the hero of garage engineering.

So I've invested several hours in this plastic piece of #$%*, and then it just breaks any damn way.  I hate it.  Honda, if you're listening, don't ever again build something entirely of metal and then make the most vulnerable piece out of plastic, you stupid morons.

Next week I will have one made out of steel, and invest even more time into this plastic (expletives!!!).

It'll take alot of time to get it right, but it won't break.

Oh, that is unless somebody out there has one of these that you'd like to share with me.

Off to the saloon,

Zeke

Sounds like JB Weld to the rescue?

My choke lever is all metal. ('75 carbs on CB750) However, I have come to the realization that they do not function.....at all. I can see the little doohickies move around, but I dunno how they work. All I know is that my bike is still a B*tch to start cold, and when running, full choke does nothing. any help??

Hey Guys:

Just got back from the tavern.   ;)

It's a 1980 650c.  If you had one it would save a lot of work.

I already fixed with JB weld -- and like I said did a pretty damn good job I think.  It's just tough to get the carbs in without the choke arm contacting the air boots.

OK, after thinking about this alot over the weekend, If I was to use a zip tie or something to hold the lever up while inserting the carbs this problem may be avoided.

Sandcast:

I've heard complaints about older 750s that the choke doesn't work well.  The 650 chokes work awesome -- the choke arm not only holds the choke closed but opens the throttle a set amount.  I remember a guy on the greenspun site said that he turns in his idle screw a fair amount on his 750 to get this effect and then when it's warmed up just turns it back down.  Worth a try I guess.

And on the 650 round slide carbs you can also adjust and set the fast idle speed. They have got it's own adjuster that works with the choke high idle system only. But you will have to take the carbs off to do the adjustment though. :(

Thanks guys. Fortunately (for some reason) my very very old old old bike doesn't appear to need the choke, it just fires up......why I have no idea, the damn thing is old as hell but doesn't know it.

prolly do, but as long as I turn the gas off, all is well, it is a #$%* to start on cold days occasionally, and if I turn the gas off and run the bowls down before parking. But if I turn the gas on and count to around 6, it starts on a few tries.

CB650, have you had a chance to see if you have this part?

I made the pic from a model I did of the part to help me design one that can be fabbed easily from steel.

If any of you guys feel like helping a brother CNC one of these from my model please let me know!!

Todd

To anyone who cares....

Here's a part that I have out for quote to replace my stupid plastic one.

I dont' know anyone with CNC skills so I dumbed it down so it can be fabbed using a lathe, mill w/x-y table, and a welder.

It consists of 3 parts -- plate, bushing, and cable grip tube.

When I have the part back at the speed shop I'll finish grind the cammed part so that it matches the old one and will operate my throttle.

What do you think?

Zeke

Edited to add:

The 3 spring pins will replace a crescent-shaped boss that served to position the spring that ties the 1/2 and 3/4 choke shafts together.
