Is this related (or am I just imagining it...)???
« on: September 09, 2008, 04:37:04 PM »
My electric start has been sluggish since getting the bike approx. 3 years ago.  I put in a different starter last year and a newer battery this year (the old one was shot).  Still sluggish.  I replaced the starter solenoid and "wa-la" the starter is not sluggish anymore.  Yea for me!  Since that time the bike has been running exceptionally smooth...
read S-M-O-O-T-H... it purrs now, when it used to run but it was a little rough.  Never rough enough to causing hesitations or any other troubles... just a bit rough.

Is it possible that the old solenoid was effecting something electrically that contributed to the rough running?  I believe that this is a stretch but I cannot come up with any other changes that I have made.

Any thoughts on this possibility?

thanks in advance

It is a long shot but if you had an intermittent short in that area that affected ignition, and you moved some wires around, you may have eliminated the short.

Corroded terminals can also cause that sort of thing.

Not to be too picky, but you most likely experienced a poor connection and not a short.  A short or "short circuit" tends to blow fuses and burn wires whenever wires touch ground.  When you replaced the solenoid, you probably tightened these poor connections upon reassembly, including your battery connections, and in the process could have improved your charging and available voltage to the ignition system.
Glad to hear you're bikes doing well.
