Will the 550/650 trans fit in the case? Well at that point it would probably be better to just buy a 550 motor as it fits the 500 frame. So I just answered my own question. Thanks for the info tho.

you'd have to ask brianj or maybe twotired. i'm unfamiliar with the 500 cases and how the trans parts fit. i guess for this article to be comprehensive, the 500 info should be included.

kick starting can be a little bit of a pain when cold and sitting for more than a week, but once it's started it runs great. pods + hot cam + no electric start pretty much explain the cold start conditions.

if i found a cheap set of 836 pistons i'd consider it, but if i were going to go for a bit more, i'd likely do a stage 3 porting on another head and get some CR carbs. probably more to gain there than from another 22 ccs...

Instead I'm cleaning it >:( ) for a bite to eat and rediscovered this thread.  paulages, you're bike ROCKS!  Do you work on bikes for a living?  I live just down the road from you (well... in Eugene anyways) and I'm curious what you would charge if I brought you all the parts?  I Have a 500 and 550 motor to work with, and technically a 650 (although I need to verify that) motor and would would love a "750-ish" displacement in it.

forgive me for Hi-jacking the thread, but if you offer this as a service I'm sure I'm not the only one interested.

hey rachet-

no, i don't do it for a living, but i do work on and sell bikes to fund my own expensive habits (e.g. the 718 bike...  ::)). i'd love to do another in the 750 range. PM me if you want to talk seriously about it. i have a good set of 650 cases also, and a good bit of parts.

Sorry that was a little misleading, currently I'm trying to get my buddy to do the conversion on his bike. Somehow I got onto 750 mode. The pistons are going into my k2 750. I'll post the results on my build thread.

That will be one hell of an engine. If I ever have to go larger (or just end up wanting to), I'll likelly use 65 or 66mm pistons. Good luck with the project!

A/  I have three shafts from my various engines with different large numbers cast into them, R9, R10 & R11.  I don't have the slightest idea how to measure the various lobes :-\

B/  Is there enough meat on the factory 650 pistons to allow them to be machined to fit under a 550 head?  The reason being I have a very nice ported head from Mr Reick, and would like to use it on top of a 650 crank/barrel combination 8)

Since I've just siezed a rod onto the crank in my 550's original motor, I now have all the time in the world (around work commitments obviously) to play about with it and the 650 I acquired at the end of last year ::)

The bike gets to stay on the road in the meantime because I managed to get hold of a complete stock motor at a good price to throw in her for the interim ;D

I would believe a stock 650 head will outflow any ported 550 head with stock valve sizes? I havent seen flow numbers but I do have a Yoshimura ported head and by comparison, the 650 head looks much better with larger valves and ports.

Has anyone done a flow bench comparison?

several people have PM'ed me about this, so i'll pipe in... i'd have to go back and do some measurements to be absolutely sure, but off the cuff i'd say that you could not make a 650 piston work with a 550 head. the dome of the 650 combustion chamber is dramatically larger, and the pistons reflect this. as is, the 650 piston will not even come close to fitting into the 550 head. maybe you could cut some serious amount of material from the edges of the piston, but you'll still have really high compression ratios, have to open the valve pockets, and likely have to work the combustion chamber portion of the 550 head a lot as well. that said, i'd be willing to bet there's a lot of room to work with the latter. but, long story short: no, you're not going to make the 650 piston work in the 550 head. also, remember: the 650 pistons aren't much larger in diameter, the stroke is just longer on the 650 crank creating most of the extra displacement. if you really want more compression, deck the 550 cylinder surface or use a thinner head gasket.

i'll definitely second what kayaker43 said. the 650 ports are much better than those on the other SOHC4 bikes.

if you're stateside, i'd say it's just different batches. in europe there were different profiles, but not here. the stamping the 550 and 650 cams i was playing around with were the same, telling me the number was probably for the blank before it was grinded.
