cb550 exhaust swap
« on: September 12, 2005, 07:37:46 PM »
Hi, I've been searching through previous posts looking for the answer to my question, but have been unable to locate an answer. What I need to know is if the the exhaust system from a 550f will bolt up directly to a 74 550, without any modification? I have the opportunity to puchase the 74 for$200 Cdn. but it needs a complete exhaust system and I already have one for the 550f.

The interface with the head on the engine is the same for all CB550s.  However there are differences in the frame mounts for the muffler.  I expect and adapter can be made for that.
The right foot peg and perhaps the kick starter are different, I believe, on the F to compensate for a larger bulk of the system there.

I've not tried the swap, personally.  Just some observations from my examples of the models.

My '78 550K has an F header on it. As TT says, the right peg pivots differently to clear the kick-starter, I haven't ever needed the kick. Other than that you'll need the brake pedal from an F, or make your own. Also, the collector will come up slightly against the foot-peg nut, so use new exhaust gaskets.

It does not work. I have two nice F model headers, but my F is F'd at the moment. The frame of the F incorporates a different left footpeg, the kick is indeed different, and the kickstand is in a different place.

Are the frames  of '74 and '78 K's that different?

I can't see what the left peg and kick-stand have to do with it.
