*teaser* R6 Forks on CB550
« on: September 09, 2008, 10:04:45 PM »
Despite what the naysayers have said, I finally got a chance to play with my new frame and forks.

74 CB550.

Don't have pictures or measurements exactly, but eye-ballin it up, everything is going to essentially bolt right up with the right bearings (which I have and will also list).

So it's exciting.

However, if the 750 steering stem is longer than the 550 then I don't see it working out quite as nicely. Without having a 750 handy I can't confirm nor deny that.

Pics tomorrow!

How does a 750 stem have any influence on installing a Yamaha R6 front end on a CB550 frame?

I do believe he was reffering to people wanting to try it out on their 750's....

Excuses Excuses  ;)

I didn't have a chance to work on it at all today, and might not before I'm sent out to work again  >:(

It has also been confirmed that the GSX-R rear swingarm is narrow enough to fit the frame after I machine up some bushings (and cut off the footpegs at the very least). And it looks like the R6 rear wheel is going to work with the GSX-R swingarm as well. Of course my only concern at this point (but it's a big one) is the chain. With the 180 series tire in the rear I'm going to be offset quite a bit on the chain. I'm hoping an offset front sprocket will be enough to make it work... and I hope I don't have to go so far as to trim the side-cover and or frame.

I'll have pics soon. I promise!

I take it that you are going to be running stock r6 rims?  If so, you may want to check out this 400 and ask the guy a few questions.  Very similar setup to where you are headed except it looks like he kept a stock rear swingarm.

Looks like your link is bad.

Yes I'm using stock R6 wheels front and rear. The only custom fab that will need to be done is on the rear end making the GSXR swingarm work as nature intended with the monoshock. The front end bolts right up like it belongs there.

Wow that bike really has been making the rounds on this site.

My setup won't be sharing much in common except in concept. I've been busy as hell with other things and getting ready to ship back out of town for work in less than a week so I don't know when I'll have pictures  >:(

I need to order up some aluminum stock for the bushings/spacers I need and make room in the shop to put the whole rig up on a table so I don't have to bend over to work on it. My back will thank me later I'm sure.

But thence came the Great Schism, when the two like tribes diverged, and the Bobbers did take the Road to Cruiserdom and the Cafe Racers did ride to Sportbikedom and they did pollute the lands along their paths with their abominable spawn of Choppers, Stuntaz and like manner of unholy douchebaggery

Always like to see these projects with some "mixing up" going on. Give others info and ideas that they might want to give a try. ;)

I am interested in how you work the whole chain setup. I have the NT650 single sided arm on mine but I don't have the wheel or sporcket carrier yet. I don't know if the offset is good but it looks close. WHere in northern michigan? I am in lower michigan. I would love to see it when you get it done.
