Putting CB650 forks on a CB550.
« on: September 13, 2005, 03:31:30 PM »
You guys see any potential problems with putting cb650 forks on a CB550? I was looking at getting a 1974 honda cb550, but the guy put CB650 forks on it he said because he liked the setup better. In the picture he sent, it kinda looks like the forks stick up taller than normal. Ill attach a pic so you can see......

That's a lot of "stick up" al right.  I have 650 forks on my 550, but they only are up about 1/2" and could be even if I wanted them that way.  (Click on my gallery listing below.)  Seems that different 650's had different forks.  I'd hate to go over the tank on that set-up.  Maybe you could just replace the top tubes......
I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

 :o  WOW  :o

Those legs are way to high , for saftey reasons and allot more reasons...
Mine stick up about 1'' , and thats because I pushed the trees down to lower the bike.

I would either cut the ones you have , or find shorter legs....

The '79-81 CB650 forks were normal springs, while the '81-82 forks were air-assist.  Go for pre-air assist, as I don't think you can rebuild air-assist forks.  And my local dealer wants $200 just for the rebuild...  BAH I shall do without for now.  They still have some spring left in 'em.

It really does raise the bike a lot. You could slide the trees up, but it'll lean.

They must be from a650 Custom. If you cut the tops off you would have to thread the tube I.D. as well as shorten the springs. Have you checked the wreckers for stock bits?
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.
