Are new SOHC tires using modern technology?
« on: September 13, 2005, 09:17:33 PM »
I was just wondering with regards to safety.  Are the new tires we buy for our SOHCs using relatively modern technology, or just whatever was left over from the previous decades?

I think it depends on the tire you buy...  I don't think the bike you ride determines what kind of rubber you're riding on.

Well, sure, you could buy trash, but I mean the best stuff that fits our tall, narrow wheels.

The Avon Roadrunners on my 500 are nothing like the ones I bought in the 70's.  Just the name.

So they are not radial etc, etc, but they're made with modern compounds to today's standards.

the ruber compounds and bonding agents are far superior to anything that was produced back in the day.

Pirelli Sport Demons are pretty nice too.  Pretty much all of the higher end tires (Avon, Mettzler etc.) will out perform you and your bike.

Bridgestone Battlax BT45's here.  Bias ply with a radial sport bike tread.  Awsome tires.

Dunlop k81 Gold Seals were period correct, not too sticky for the suspension, look right, and I got them installed with new bands and tubes for $200 a pair at local Honda dealer.

I use bridgestone spitfires. They look good on the bike period wise and while i dont really corner aggresivley, they stick pretty good.

I can say that the BT45s handle awsome.  I dove into a corner so hard over the weekend that I dragged the exhaust.  The tires held and didn't even give me 1 ounce of no confidence. Best ever, granted there not period looking,etc.. but I wanted performance over look.
