My 450 build
« on: September 12, 2008, 05:44:16 PM »
Well, this build started in my head about twenty years ago.  I am just 26 though.  This bike was bought new by my grandfather in 1970 from a local Honda shop.  He parked it in his basement in 1980 when he bought his Harley FLT.  Ever since I was big enough to climb on this bike in the basement I wanted it.  I used to go downstairs for hours and wipe down the chrome and painted sections.  I kept it cleaned because I always thought one day he would give it to me.  I did this over the years.  When I was older I would go down and kick it over everyonce in a while to make sure it hadn't seized up.  The bike has 5,500 miles on it.  It has some rust in most places because it sat in his shop for the last two years.  Well, I picked it up a bout a year ago and put it in my little garage.    Well, grandpa has parkinsons disease and now cancer.  This build is a tribute to him and the era in which he lived.  When he was my age he bought this bike as a gift to himself.  He worked crazy hard his whole life.  He taught me everything I know about anything to do with my hands.  I used to go down to his house every weekend.  We would get up at 4:30 each morning and get started working on his farm, and then move on to his rental houses and finally end up in the shop working on whatever project or tool he needed fixed that evening.  I've been waiting to build this bike for about 20 years.  I can't tell you how pumped I am to finally get started on this thing.  The overall these is going to be between a cafe cruiser and a semi chopper. I've got in my head what I want to build so I'm getting after it on a pretty decent budget so far.  So anyway, enough with the talking here are a few pics of what I have done so far.

I got too excited while tearing it apart and I don't have a pic of it when it was all put together.  I do have a picture somewhere of my grandpa sitting on it with a full faring with my mom on the back sometime in the mid 70's.  I'll put it on when I find it.\

Second is of the tank rust removal I used.  worked really well.

Third is of the bike as it sits right now.  I've got a ton more to do but this is kindof what I'm going for.  I still haven't figured out the seat.  I really want to come up with something that looks vintage.  I don't want some glossy massive cafe seat bolted to the back.

Last pic is of me on the bike.  This bike may be a little bit of a mismatch size wise for me.  Good thing I don't give a crap.

and last, does anyone know what this is and does.  I'm still a little bit of a noob when it comes to electronics.

thats all for now.  I'm still debating on painting the wheels and lower forks black.  haven't decided if it will look right or not.

they might make you move this thread to other bikes since it's a twin. I love that bike though and it'll probably be my next bike to buy if i can find one

Go you good thing, do a rebuild in memory of your Grandad, it was obviously meant to come to you eventually.
These 450 twins were a rare beast in New Zealand.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

As it sits now.  Forks and tree's painted as well as new bars and gators for the forks.  I also scotch brited the lower fork legs.

With pegs in their new position.  Hoping this is going to work out in  this spot

Well, its been a little while since I updated my thread.  I have since ordered and installed quite a few more things.  I wanted to keep with the old school theme, so I installed some old style schwinn bicycle grips.  I also picked up some aluminum headlight mounts off of ebay.  After some thinking about the seat and how to build.  I decided to forgo the $150 ebay fiberglass seat and make my own.  I used the stock seat pan with the addition of the rear section of an xs400 gas tank.  I've done a little polishing here and there on different side covers.  Other than that, I haven't made a ton of progress.  The next target will be finishing the engine cleanup with the polishing of a few more parts.  Then I can finish up wiring and cables.  Finish the seat and get this thing on the road.  I'm sure it will be a while still though.  With the addition of my new daughter to the family, I'm in no hurry to finish this project.

Always like to see an old 450 being worked over. Looking good, looking forward to seeing the progress on this one and the fact that your Granddad had it, makes it of more interest to me. My Granddad's last motorcycle was and Indian (rebadged Royal Enfield) Woodsman (500cc Single) Nd the only other bike I know he had was a 39' Indian Chief.

i know the feeling.  I am working on my grandfathers 1972 cb350F.  We would sit on it in the basement of my dads house and dream of riding it.  My dad sold it and I re aquired it here recently I am restoring it somewhat original  good luck on the build.

Nice build!  Keep it up.  I too am working on my '72.  Using alot of 1968 parts to give it a retro theme.  Hopefully next week I will be able to update more of the work that has been done.

Alright, well, baby and mommy went out this morning so I got to get some more work done.
First things first, gotta get the seat ready.  I stripped the nasty paint off of the seat only to find some nice bondo on the old tank that I used, little metal work will clean that up.  Second job was to figure out a way to mount the starter solinoid and a few other odds and ends electrical including the battery.  I want it to look as clean as possible so a little finagling had to be done. Here's what it all looked like when finished.

I also cut the pegs down one and a quarter inches to lower my legs a little on the bike.  It is suprisingly much more comfortable.

man, its been a while.  I have had some crazy stuff going on so I haven't made much progress on it.  Well, my grandfather passed away about 7 months ago.   I have since moved the bike up to our new place and haven't touched it since the last time I posted pics.  I am dropping the tank off tomorrow to be dipped and lined, after that it should just be a matter of doing some wiring to get it running solid.  I need to finish the seat, I got some buffalo leather from my cousin who makes baseball gloves, I haven't decided how to do that yet.  I'll post when I have a few more updates.

definitely not going to paint, these are the original colors of the bike and I wouldn't touch them.  I haven't decided on the seat yet though.  I've got some buffalo that I'm going to be using on the seat cushion.  I may try to paint to match, or just go black...I don't know yet.

Loving the build, I had a '69 CL450 I loved, and would like to get another. I'd suggest considering some sort of fork brace if you're going to keep it without a fender. Good luck.
