I'm new to the forums. Here is my 77 CB550 project thus far. I think it will be a total tear down. The motor has low compression on one cylinder so I'll be cracking it open soon to see what is going on.

In between constructing a playhouse in the backyard and sneezing my head off from alergies I got to do some work on the cb550. I removed the wiring harness. The only electrical left is the instrument cluster.

Well, 100+ degree heat every day has been harshing my efforts to work on my bike. But, I finally got the engine up on the bench and started disassembly. Of course, the the head doesn't want to separate from the jugs. I don't think this engine has been apart in a looonnggg time. I can't wait to see how it looks on the inside.

It's almost time to order some parts. I've been looking through the vendor lists. Plenty to choose from. Any perfered vendors. I need a gasket set, rings, valve stem seals and a cam chain.

Great project. I'm about to check compression on my own 77' 550. If I find one low then I'll have your thread to follow to fix. Nice job and keep us posted!

At present, two sets in the country, backorders are showing an ETA of 08/11/09

I'm hesitant to order anything that is on back order.

I got the valve spring compressor I needed. I still had to do a little mod by placing a socket on top of the valve because of the tight clearance. I got all of the valves removed. My wife took the camera so no picks yet. I need to order parts! I will need the valve stem seals ASAP. Next step is to clean the bare head.

Please take a look at these pics of my cylinders. Unfortunately, one of my kids played junior mechanic and took a scraper and gouged the bottom egde of one of the cylinders. Is this trashed? Can this be saved or do I need to replace it? Definately bummed about this one!

dang man that sucks you should educate your kid about not messing with your stuff especially when its a bike you might be riding then giving to them. it doesnt look that bad

Given where the marks are, I thing you should be all set. Just take the file back and clean up the edges of the grooves.

The rings don't come down beyond where the jug starts to flange out, so the cylinder should be fine. Just make sure you clean up all the edges of his new edges so that your rings don't hang up on them when you put the pistons back in place.

While I was waiting for my parts to arrive from Z1 I decided to work on my metal shaping skills. I hope to get good enough eventually make some pieces for my bike. This is an aluminum tail piece that would attach to an aluminum seat pan( not made yet). This is just a practice piece I did with no templates. When I get to the point of making the actual piece I can use this to help me make templates for a piece that will better fit the bike and the seat pan.
