DynaTek Rocks -Update Coil Failure - Less than 1,000 miles
« on: September 06, 2008, 08:16:36 PM »
I thought I'd ask if anyone had experienced problems with the Dyna coils. I installed these last year when building the 836 for the 2nd time. I installed the 2.2 ohm Dynas at the same time I did the Iridium plugs, Dyna 2000 controller, and the rods and CR carbs. The whole package has less than 1,000 miles. The bike was hard to start one day and once running - it was soggy. I pulled the plug from #1 hole and saw it looked dark and wet. I quickly learned that 1 and 4 were dark, but my spark checker burned twice as bright when # 2 or # 3 was attached. I checked the Dyna trigger and all of the wiring and grounds - all check fine. I moved the trigger wires from 1/4 to 2/3 and the problem stayed on 1/4 - so bad coil. I've got a new pair of the same Dyna 2.2 (gray ones) ordered, but I'm not happy about that life span.

Comments please -

Thanks,
Gordon

Sept 13, 2008 - I called Dyna as some of you suggested. I told them the whole story, told them it had been over 1 year and about 1,000 miles, but I had all of the Dynoman receipts. Larry immediately said "send me the coil and we'll test and make it right with you". I could not be happier. He gave me a RA and the coils is on it's way to California for verification. Good folks there at DynaTek.

For those making that suggestion - the beer is on me!

Regards,
Gordon

wow....makes me scared a bit there.

I've got a DYNA2000 I had been running 3.0 ohm coils on with no probs, and last time i got into the bike with the tank off I put the 2.2's on that came with the DYNA2000....
I've got.... 500-800 miles on them so far...

No problems for me yet.
Have you contacted DYNATEK to see if they would trade the defunct unit for a working 2.2 coil?

I have had nothing but nice pleasant experiences talking to the techs there, but have yet to have a serious problem with any dyna product.
Those 3.0 ohm coils had... 5000-6000 miles on them with not a problem as well.

Hope you can get something worked out...

I never called them. I just ordered up a new pair figuring I'd install the one I needed to and have a spare. Once I'm back going and the new ones come in - I may just do that and see if they will replace it.

Thanks - I really had not thought of that since these are over a year old. I don't get to ride that bike much, so time runs out before the miles do.

What an honest guy.

Why not call them up and tell them about your loyalty to their products, and your dis-satisfaction with that one coil.

I'm guessing they might do something for you.
If not, ask to talk to their supervisor to so you and DYNATEK can "work something out".

Just make sure you know what you want to happen in the end before you call.
I have found if you come up with 2 scenarios for outcomes things normally work better.

For example  - say Either a replacement for the 1 bad coil, or perhaps a X% or XX$$ discount of future purchases.
Heck i've settled for free hats before.
(how many people have FP diesel hats, or Felpro?? In your case it'd be DYNATEK)

I would contact them before you receive the new ones!

Make sure to tell them of the pleasant experiences, and how many miles... then the letdown of the 1 coil. Make sure to re-iterate the fact you already re-purchased new coils.(proving product loyalty even though you had a failure already)

Unless you want to try the "hey my new coil is bad" swap.....
But thats between you and your conscious.
I personally have had better luck the other way.

For what its worth. My 3ohm Dyna coils and Dyna S have been good for at least the last 10,000 miles.

In the twenty years or so I've had them on my 750 I replaced one, it only shorted in the rain!  It isn't unheard of.

I've never had a Dyna ( or old Andrews) coil fail. I'd call and return it to Dyna. I thought I had a bad 2000 module and sent it to them. They tested it and returned it....it did turn out to be something else

I had. In spite of it’s high price, one already gave up after 30000 kms. The original TEC coils served me over 70.000 kms and are still O.K.

I've never had product failures with the Dynatek stuff I've had.  But have talked with their tech department several times..and they seemed quite friendly and helpful [I was trying to understand more about dwell curves..why the need to advance timing when using stock advancer plates, et al.].

They did tell me that if EVER any of their products failed..they would replace them @ no charge (assuming that it was product failure and not consumer error).  Also they related to me that there are very few returns on either Dyna S or 2000 systems.  They didn't specifically say that about their coils though.  But I know there are thousands of units out there in service with little or no complaints.

So..I would go along with what others have said here..and call Dynatek..ask them for a replacement..or credit.

[BTW..for those that weren't aware..the Dyna folks said that the magnetic triggers on their S systems..sometimes lose their magnetic charge after years of storage (mainly in metal tool cabinets)..or lack of use..which usually shows up through erratic or intermittent performance of the ignition system.  But..that they can replace just the magnetic sensors in those units (that mount to the advancer plate)..if or when necessary]

Guys, I love tools. The plugs on the right are the original Iridums that I installed during the build and are the ones I pluuled from holes 1 and 4 the other day. The two plugs on the left are the new NGK plugs I stuck in just to confirm the poor running. You can see the Iridiums are fouled and not firing under pressure. The brand new NGK's never fired. These were in there less than 20 seconds.

The tool part - once I checked the trigger and Dyna 2000 unit's trouble-shooting (covered extremely well and easily done) in the installation manual, then swapped the trigger leads at the coils - I then attached my spark tester (a simple male/female link with a bulb built-in to see the presence of spark and intensity) - it was instantly obvious that the intensity of spark on the 1/4 coil was nowhere near that intensity of the 2/3 coil. If I had started with that tool - I could have saved some time fooling around swapping wires.

This is one of little things that cost a few dollars, but has helped me many times check spark.

Regards,
Gordon

I really like the Dyna system. I'm running the Dyna S on my KZ900 and the 2000 on my CB750/836. I went with the 2.2 ohm gray coils while most here use the 3.0 ohms green ones. The 2.2 coils demand more from the electrical system, but put out a lot hotter spark to the plugs. I went with the Dyna 2000, the wires, caps, coils, and Iridums as Buzz recommended during my build. Based on these many testimonials for Dyna products, I'd say I've got a rare failure and should be fine for years to come once I install the replacement I have ordered from Dynoman.
