CB650SC Suddenly shuts off?
« on: September 17, 2008, 09:03:25 PM »
I was working on my bike, putting new ignition coils and spark plugs in it, when all the sudden the bike shuts completely off and won't turn back on. By off, I mean zero power.

I replaced the reg/rec today, along with 2 ignition coils and 4 spark plugs. Tried putting the old ignition coils back on, no change. Also did the same with the reg/rec.

It seemed to flicker a little bit since I replaced these parts, I didn't think anything of it until now.

What's going on here?

Did it blow the fuse?

So you had the bike off, installed the new componets and when you went to turn it back on you got nothing?

Did it blow the fuse?

So you had the bike off, installed the new componets and when you went to turn it back on you got nothing?

Here's the order of what I did

1.) Replaced Reg/Rec
2.) Replaced 1st Ignition Coil (Cyl 1 & 4)
3.) Started up to test spark plugs
4.) Got new spark plugs
5.) Replaced 2nd Ignition Coil
6.) Turned on bike, 1 seconds later shut off

I don't understand how to check the fuse, I've read the Clymer manual for my bike, don't understand it. Also confused on how to test the rectifier.

How can I check it and if it is a dud where can I replace the fuse? Why would the fuse have blown in the first place?

Well how I would do it would be so.

Everything was working before you replaced number 2 coil. You changed the coil and now it wont work, changing the coil caused your problem. So start there and check and recheck to make sure its hooked up right.

Then just to make sure test your voltage on your battery.

Sounds to me like you maybe have a power wire going to the frame?

To check the fuses by sight just take it out and see if it is burnt out.
Instead of checking the fuse, just put a new one in. Make sure its the correct rating. If it does the same thing again, on for a second then no power its probably your fuse.

If you did indeed have a short, a power wire going directly to the frame then the main fuse would blow.

Already charged the battery overnight and checked it three times.

I may have accidentally put it on wrong. I'll buy a few fuses and test the coils again. CB650SC's use 30A fuses right?

Check your/a manual or search around here to find out which rating you need. There are multiple fuses on the bike so each one may be rated differently. Main would be one rating and the headlight another and so on.

My bet would be you mixed up a ground and power wire on the coil.

My bike shut down once suddenly like that and it was the main fuse that blew. I assume you opened the little black case behind the side covers and all fuses were intact?

I had a link to a site that specifically outlined the process of checking a bad rectifier but can't find it right now. Search TwoTired's responses, he is a fountain of knowledge or you might be able to find some useful info here outside of SOHC4:

Rectifiers and regulators (in case you need replacement)

Hope any of it helps

Dumb question but it has to be asked, what position is your "kill switch" in?
OK sorry I had to check, does anything work? Lights? horn? indictors?
Is it just the high voltage side of your wiring (coils etc) and is the low voltage (lights/horn etc) still working?
Such a catastrophic failure could only be a total death of your battery or the main supply from battery so that wierd main fuse is worth a good (take it out and clean the area it fits into) check.
You could also check the handle bar fuses but thats all low voltage stuff.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

wierd main fuse = fusible link, found behind your left side cover beside the starter solenoid(the positive from battery goes to this)
