How to remove the two sunken cylinder head nuts
« on: September 13, 2008, 12:50:33 PM »
I want to replace the head gasket on my 400F2 and have removed the rocker gear. Next is the cylinder head, all nuts are loose, except the two sunken ones near the plugs. They are rusted, rounded ans solid. There is no way I can remove them.. Has anyone an idea how to remove these two?

Thanks

Try using an extractor. Find a drill bit a little smaller than the OD of the extractor. Drill into the bold about 1/4inch. Definately soak the bolt in some penetrant, then use the extractor to back the bolt out.

If you have rounded the nuts the only chance is a socket that will "hammer" on. If they are originaly 12mm i think a 1/4 or 3/16 whitworth works well

Craftsman has sockets designed to grab rounded bolts and nuts. You don't have to pound them on. They work very well - even when I use them. This won't be the last time they come in handy.

Thanks for all the replies! I will try the drill first, as I already tried the other ones.

If you drill those studs, you'll be sorry. Replacing studs is a true PITA. Try anything else first.

I will buy new nuts (I'll make a pic of the old ones). He did it as I already tried, with a chisel (don't know if that is the correct English term).
