CB750 - Fair price on this bike??? - UPDATE...
« on: September 14, 2008, 06:30:17 AM »
So my KO is done and a '75 CB750K has found me.  I am in discussion with the 2nd owner of the bike and would like your valued input.  Here is the good:
20,000 miles, ran weekly and runs great, no oil leaks, NOS front fender, tires fair, original exhaust with crack at weld and no baffles, original chain, good general maintenance with oil changes, plugs, points, side covers fair with emblems, good chrome, paint good for age, has title.
The bad: original owner tipped bike over in the garage and bent the handlebars.  The hit broke the tab off on the lower tree that is supposed to keep the bars from hitting the tank.  Hence, golf ball size dent in tank from fork ear.  My thing is to restore to showroom so I would be talking $1300 or so for exhaust already.  He is asking $2,700 but will go lower.  Click on the pic to make larger.  Thanks for the input...

I guess it all depends on what your looking for mate...
You could do a sympathetic restore, fixing the broken bits and maybe re-doing the paint right or you could go museum quality...
Your end product will decide on your cost, its your call. I dont know what these old girls are going for in the US but i would think that is a little over the top price wise.
Then  again i`m only fresh back to bikes after 20+ years away

Looks pretty average to me.  You will have to go through everything anyway.  he may get that kind of money from a kid wanting a bike or someone with some sentimental attachment to the CB750 but I would call him out at asking 2X what it would be worth to me.  They just take too darn much money to put back on the road and make right to pay much in the beginning.  my 2 cents.

Exhausts+tank repair+paint & decals+lower tree; oil leaks wont be that far away and how popular is a 75 as against a 70/71?

not worth it in my mind but its youre $ and time

+1. Id say its worth $1000- 1300 not $2700 especially with the dents and damage.

This was my first bike (1975/76 CB750 in blue back in 1992...sold it after a cross country trip to a dealer in Colombia, Missouri) - great colour!

good luck
Andy

I'd guess it's worth $1500, maybe a little more.  Not a good candidate for showroom restoration in my book unless you don't care about economics.  You'll put $3500 in a $1500 bike and end up having something worth $3K at best.  But it is a pretty bike.

At that price and condition I would pass. There is a MUCH nicer 75K in the same color in the Boston area thatthe guy WAS asking $2500.00 for.

Your K0 was DEFINITELY worth doing a full resto on. This K5 DEFINITELY is NOT! A decent rider is about what it will be.

My thinking is this.. buy it for an everyday rider..
fix the steering stop on frame and touchup, then fix or replace lower tree.. bars might straighten and were still available a few years back.

then ride the hell out of it..

I dont feel putting another 500 into the tank is good value.. just use it everyday, ride it hard & dont worry if it gets scratched..

.. if you can live with the seat use it.. myself that flat line on top just was not what I wanted to look at anymore..

Excellent points guys!!!  You have opened my eyes.  I did not think about it not being that much of a collector.  I do like the color and agree it is over priced, but I am sure he would come down.  But maybe this is just not the one for me.  I sure would like to find a 71 gold.  Thanks for the input...

That is about what that bike would sell for hear in San Francisco CA.
I personally would not pay more than 2300.
But if you love it and you have the cash, grab it.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

like everyone is saying, that thing would probably go for that price if it were already restored. I'd say around $1500 at the most in that condition.

Prices vary from region to region, where I live he would get what he's asking and "mint" bikes are going for $,5000+.

Where I live at least, these bikes are starting to get hard to find. In the last three months I've been stopped or followed home five times with people wanting to buy one of my 750s, when I say the minimum I would accept is $5,000 they've said no problem and two have left me there names in the event I want to sell.

A lot of people have a lot of money now and they're not enthusiasts like we are they're collectors. I received an offer I couldn't refuse and sold my 71 Norton Commando for $10,000 to a guy who has it sitting in his living room, he doesn't even ride. The Norton is really worth as much as a nice CB750 from the same era.

Thanks guys for the input.  I decided not to buy that 75 and will keep my eyes open for a 71 or so.  Something more collectable and maybe a gold... ;D
Not in a big hurry so I can just browse for the right bike and the right price.

1975 CB750K5 - Well, I did indeed take a look at this bike a couple weeks ago just to get it out of my mind.  After a detailed inspection, I determined it was not a candidate for restoration...at least not for the price he wanted at $2,500.  Owner says he tipped bike over in garage, but the damage is more from a moving crash.  Besides the tank damage from the handlebars hitting it, the OEM mufflers were shot, fork ears bent, blinkers not restorable, stator cover not restorable, handlebars bent, seat bad, handlebar stop on lower tree bent, side cover broke, etc.  I could see paying $1,000 for it but that is all.  Not like we are talking 69-71 or so here.  So I will passively just keep my eyes open for my next project.
