Engine Dowel Pins Source
« on: August 28, 2008, 05:01:17 PM »
Looking for a source for those various sized dowel pins used to aligned engine cases and covers. Most of the part stores where you enter the PN's will indicate that they have them until you check out and they void the purchase because one or more of the parts selected are no longer available...

Maybe I can use nothing more that stainless steel tubes with the correct O.D.???

I am having the same problem currently with my 750 k3 rebuild. Need one of the corner dowels between cylinder and head. Absolutely unavailable. My next attempt will be measuring said dowel ( think its 14x22mm), and trying to match it up. Lots of online sources for random dowels.

Just drop by your local Honda shop, they're apt to have loads of used dowels.

I actually found dowels with the correct diameter (12mm) for my K0 750 build at a local dirt bike shop. They only had one size, but it was the right length for the longer dowels. They looked exactly like stock. I had to cut two other down a bit with my Dremel to make the right length for the shorter ones, but they slipped in just fine. Try other part shops. You might get lucky.

I bought a few dowels when putting the engine together last year from the Honda dealer. In fact some of these are still used on late model engines (CBR600) so they even had some sizes in stock.

I did a little more research after a light bulb idea. http://www.mcmaster.com/ has a great metric dowel selection in either stainless or plain steel from 1M to 20M diameters with a great variety of lengths...

Make sure to use anti-seize if you go for the stainless dowels in order to avoid galvanic corrosion.  Personally I'd suggest the mild steel ones.

Also, McMaster's dowels seem to be solid rather than hollow, wonder if that'd make a difference with anything.  I mean, aside from actually being able to remove them at a later point in time without crushing them :)

Edit:  Never mind, they have "pull-out" style dowels that are hollow, and have a much better wall thickness than the stock honda knock pins :)

Another potential problem is, according to APTECH77, you have to be sure they're not too long.  He had a problem with that when putting the head back on his 400, and oil leaking everywhere.  Turned out the dowels bottomed out and kept the head and the gasket from sealing.  He actually bent one or two.

Actually the McMaster-Carr items I was looking at were hollow but had internal threading to aid in removal... Great idea! Eliminate the one problem that destroys the existing ones in the first place.

And I would use anti-seize on any stainless I would use. Same stuff I am using on all my stainless bolts.
