1981 CB650 Custom fork and triples swap?
« on: September 14, 2008, 10:34:08 AM »
Greetings...I have been sifting through information here but can't find exactly what I'm looking for and need some expert guidance...I would like to swap out my triple trees for something that will accept 1" bars. I know the 650 has a shorter neck than the 750 and many later models have a different diameter neck than the 650 also. Is there an assembly that will lend itself to the change? Anyone out there made a similar swap? Thanks for the help...Joe

A '85 ninja front end is a pretty close match.
I have been able to modify one to work... But it's not easy.

bearings both top and bottom are wrong size. Bottom too big, top too small.
As well as the shoulder for the upper bearing on the ninja neck is too high.
Cutting that shoulder back a 1/4 inch or so should clear up any issues with that.

But this is what it looks like grafted onto a '82 cb650 frame.
The tank and seat in the pics are not stock.

wrong pic., changed it.

I'm interested in using some internal hand controls on this project and although I could cut and graft some bars I'd prefer not to. The controls I have seen require 1" bars or come already in 1" bars depending on how you wish to go. Any other ideas? Are there internal hand controls made for 7/8" bars? I can't seem to locate any....Thanks...Joe

DarkRider....Thanks for the reply. By adapters do you mean someting that will install in the stock clamps and have a 1" clamp above that? If so can you direct me to that adapter? Thanks...Joe

I found the solution to my problem. DarkRider mentioned adapters so I went surfing and came up with a couple options. 1. Topar Racing makes and adapter that has a half circle on the bottom of a split block that fits into the stock clamp's bottom, the bars go into the split block and the bolts go all the way through the split block to the stock clamp bottom. Presto Fat Bars!!! 2. Rox makes a fancy riser adapter, actually for snowmobiles but I don't see why it wouldn't work on a bike. 7/8" to 1" is the same on asphalt as it is on snow last time I checked. The cool thing about these is they're adjustable through an arch fore and aft making bar positioning limitless....within limits of course!! Check these out and let me know what you think...Thanks to all of you who help the helpless...We need it....Joe

Pm the original poster in that one for a source to get the clamps and bar if you need one.
