CB500 and Dual Disk another setup question
« on: September 15, 2008, 07:30:44 AM »
First off this site and all you guys rock. I knew very little about Motorcycle machining before finding this site. I have finally got my 71 CB500 running and I was doing some plug chops to check my jetting (it looks a rich). So was just about to go to a 115 main jet when I noticed the lower brake line was leaking. So instead killing myself, I got a new set of braided steel lines ($40) at a local shop. I have been planning a dual disc conversion and have collected some of the parts need for the conversion; another caliper, 550 forks.

Now after that long story here are my questions.

A friend gave me a Vulcan MC not sure if it will work. How do I find out it’s piston size? Can I take it apart and just measure it? I have googled with no luck

The brake pad in the extra caliper is stuck. I have tried compressed air, chiseling, prying, but it will not come out. I left it soaking in PJ Busters. How do I get it out?? Or do I just have to buy another caliper?

Next question. The 550 forks (I got on this site form Honda!, thanks) I have no idea of their serviceability. I can compress them about ½’’ with my hands. How should I test them better? Is this ok should I rebuild them? What parts should I replace? Or can they wait until I can afford some progressive springs?

Last question.  What grade bolts do I need for the bolts holding the disk on? I have found a few places that have 8.8 grade bolts but do I need strong 10.9?

Sorry for the long windedness.
Thanks for all the help in past and I am sure more in the future.

If you use the search and try caliper or brakes you will get lots of ideas on the caliper, forks i would fit seals and change the oil, bolts 8.8 should be ok
