small ring compressor
« on: September 15, 2008, 11:13:02 AM »
i know there have been several threads describing people's methods for compressing piston rings during a rebuild, but i've not seen anyone list a source for a small ring compressor. anyone? i usually use my fingers and wooden sticks, but i'm doing an 850 kit right now with rings that just don't want to go that way. sure don't want to fold an oil rail on an 850 bore...

check Pitposse.com

They sell a ring compressor with three different bands to accomodate different piston sizes.  You'll need two of them to do a four cylinder engine.

Pretty reasonable on price.  $24 or something for one.  Cheaper than replacement piston rings...

Here's the direct link.

I used large radiator hose clamps as ring compressors. Worked fine just don't tighten them up too much. They will slip down the piston as the rings enter the bores.

the problem i've had with hose clamps is that the inner surface is not continuous. I've made them work before, but don't like them.

thanks! all of the ring compressors i've seen in this style don't go small enough to fit these pistons.

I picked up a pair from a Norton/Triumph tool supplier on eBay. They are made for 60-65mm pistons which is perfect for the typical 750 61mm piston.

I used a HASTING compressor, on a lot of different pistons. It works very well, not sure of minimum size tho or part number.. got it 20 or more years back.

Similar in construction to a hose clamp, but wider, smoother and has a quick release to get it off.
