Side cover flew off or stolen?
« on: September 15, 2008, 12:24:19 PM »
so yesterday i decided to take a ride up highway 32 from chico to chester. theres a part before the twisties hit where its long and straight. i gave it full throttle and got it pretty close to 120mph and had to stop because every little bump kept pushing my body towards towards the rear of the seat. anyways i got to home and the next morning i wake up to go to school and notice that my left side cover is missing. at first i thought some one stole since they are so easy to take off and worth alot on ebay. but then i thought maybe it could of blew off...im not sure yet. im going to go and re trace my tracks and hopefully i can find it. the thing that sucks is that i just had it repainted.

how easy do these covers blow off?

easy enough at 120 mph espically if your grommets that hold it to the frame are old and worn out, my left cover fell off and a nephiew of mine stepped on it when I first got mine, I since have replaced it with the mayer cover from JCwhitney and it goes on with screws(which sucks but its secured ::) ), and if you get up to that speed again hug the bike you won't feel like your getting sucked off so much. ;D

I believe PODs also help remove side covers at speed.  The stock air box does fair job of quieting the air turbulence behind it.  30 year old rubber grommets are far less grabby than new ones, too.

I fitted new grommets during my 550 rebuild and can definitely agree with what TT says, I really struggle to pull my covers off without breaking them now :-\

Well if you do not find it, watch the local craigslist and scour ebay. If anything, you might find it and be able to get the address of the bastard and see how he likes his own medicine! ;D

Where can I get the grommets for the side covers?  Mine look like cheese.

I looked at the fiche at bikebandit and couldn't tell what I was looking at.  That one was too confusing.  I guess I could have them figure it out, lol.
