Help me understand cluch adjustment

Ok, I have used the search function and read postings about the CB500 clutch.  I also have followed both the Clymers and Honda manuals on clutch adjustment, yet my clutch still doesn't feel right.

When I follow the instructions for turning the adjusting screw/sleeve on the left cover by first turning it until you meet resistance and then backing off a few millimeters, I find that I have way too much free play at the lever that I cannot adjust out.  The only way that I can get within the tolerance for lever free play is to crank the adjustment screw/sleeve all the way and not back it off.  I then adjust the free play at the lever to be within spec. 

The clutch pull seems to be pretty firm, but I can engage my gears ok.  I do notice that if I am stopped I have to slip the clutch slightly to engage 1st.  I have no problems getting into neutral, even with a warm engine.  I don't notice any other issues shifting once underway.

What is this telling me?  Is my clutch worn?  Do I need a new cable because mine is stretched (I don't know how old the clutch cable is)?  Should the pull on the lever be so firm?  Any ideas?

Firm lever = performance clutch springs installed by PO, or a cable that is binding.  Lube the cable and un-hook it to see if it has any resistance.  It should slide like hot butter on a teflon skillet (or something like that) May also be something binding under the housing in the little three ball, ramp thingy. ;D

Too much play at lever + hard to pull = replace the cable, imho.

Running the clutch adjuster all the way in means your clutch lifter is partially engaged even when you're not touching the lever.

The top and bottom adjuster are basically adjusting the same thing, so if you're finding a difference, it basically means you've got something upstream of the bottom adjuster that isn't right (e.g., cable).

True of the cable adjusters, but the clutch lifter adjuster is something different.

So, based on the responses so far, am I to understand that perhaps my clutch cable is old and stretched?  The longer, stretched cable is causing me to have to crank down the adjustment sleeve on the left cover to take out the slack?  Am I understanding this correctly?

Old, stretched, and/or possibly binding.

I say take thw cable right off the bike and move it with your hand. If should move back and forth very freely. If you have any resitance whatsoever, it needs to be replaced. If you replace it and your still having problems, then it's time to look at #5 above.  ;)

Check the cable routing.  More bends or the sharper the bends, the more the internal cable will resist sliding inside.  This also increases it's internal wear.

Just a guess, but have you put on low bars with the stock cable length?
