Wiring fun on my '76 CB750F
« on: September 16, 2008, 01:02:49 PM »
The fiberglass vetter fairing which came with my bike has been slowly cracking in half.  Last week the crack grew a couple inches and I took some time this weekend to swap out a different vetter fairing which I have.

The wiring is different between the two because both were hack jobs.  Additionally the wiring on my K6 seems a little funky.

I managed to get the headlight hooked up and turn signals working, but now the bike has no running lights.  The indicator lamps (high beam, turn, oil, etc.) are lit.   I worked it in the daylight hours and left it to help with dinner...

After dinner I put the bike back in the garage and tried the lights again and noticed that straight ahead I had no front running lights, but head light lo and high, all indicator lights and brake and turn signals.  When I turned the handlebars to the left the headlight dimmed and all turn signals light up!

So tonight I'll hunt around for the short or loose connection.

Arent hacked wiring rats nests fun?

Thanks for the moral support!

Fishhead, those wiring diagrams for the fairing are nice.  Fortunately that side of things is pretty easy to figure out.  Its the butchered front end of the harness that has me scratching my head.

I'm pretty sure I'm contending with an unconnected ground which may have become disconnected in the course of my fairing swap.  Many of the connections are loose.  I'm going through them methodically cleaning them, dialectric greasing them and re-connecting them.

Unfortunately 2 PO's ago failed in their attempt to put in a radio and heated grips.  They cut and spliced factory wiring willy nilly with non color correct wires.  Isn't that just the best?   ::)

Good news is that I bolted up the fairing this morning and have turn signals and headlight high and low.  Just no running lights still, including the tach and spedo illumination.

That will get me back and forth to work for a little while until I start to leave in the dark....  And will buy me a little more riding time this week until I have a moment to dig back in to the rats nest.

Uncrash,

Do you need the factory wiring diagram for the 75/76 F?
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Thanks Jerry -- but I have a Honda shop manual which covers my K6 (and others).

The problem lies between hackjob wiring and loose connections.

I have 2 hours carved out of my schedule to dig in tomorrow, and will sleep with my fingers crossed tonight.
