My 76 750k project (Cafe) (First Rebuild for me)

I just picked up this 76 750k that i want to turn into a cafe racer the bike has 40,000 miles but is in pretty good shape here are some pictures i picked it up for $600.00. I will be posting pictures of my progress as it will keep me motivated to work on the project. Let me know what you think.

if anybody has information on using newer style sport bike swingarms with monoshock with 750s or newer style sportbike front forks with a 750 it would be much appreciated as that is what i plan to use on this bike.

For sure!!!!...It does look to be in better shape than mine when I got it in 2000. I would maybe find a rattier one to cut up.

The only thing I see missing is the stock exhaust!!!.....You may wanna rethink butchering that particular bike!!

Wow. Ambitious :) I've seen pages about such black magic but they're usually short on details ( I placed the swingarm from this GSXR. The geometry is almost right and I got it to work but if you're reading this you already know that kind of stuff).

here is the bike now i got the tank, headlight,front fender seat and a few other things removed and also tried test fitting a gas tank off of a 82 or so F model, i think the tank looks pretty good.

You wanna sell that tank and or sidecovers by any chance? I have a dead stock red 750 and am in desprate need of both. Or seat? It would be shame to cut them up.
   This pretty much sums it up.   76' CB592 cafe. 69 750 project, 03 CBR954, 75 750 super sport.

dang caferacerx!!  i bought my 76 cb750k cafe project for 600 bucks with just under 40K miles on it too, WIERD!!!  mine was in nowhere NEAR as good of condition!!  crazy though, it was like my post with a different user name, CRAZY!!!  keep us posted

Well i am making some progress, i have now got rid of all of the wiring, carbs, and i finally got the exhaust off but those flange screws will not budge, i also was able to remove the engine so it is out of the bike and all i have is a rolling frame now. So i think i am going to put the frame away for now and start tearing into the engine, this should be interesting as it looks like some of the screws on the covers on the left side are stripped out :-\ ::) some how i will need to get those out as well as figure out a way to remove the exhaust flange screws. If anybody has any suggestions i am open, also i want to do the motor in flat black i am wondering the best way to do this, whether i should have it powdercoated or if i should paint it, if anyone has insight on this it would be greatly appreciated. I will be posting more pics tommorrow to show the progress.

Got the engine on the bench, wow that thing is a tank. did a little cleaning on the engine with some simple green which works pretty good(link to pics). But i did come across a dilemma already and that is the swingarm that i want to use is from a 01 cbr 600rr or f4i the front of the swingarm where it mounts to the frame is 10 and 1/2 inches wide where the frame opening is only 9 and1/2 inches so i am not sure what i can do with that, the swingarm does not look like i should cut it down, and i am not sure if the answer is to cut the frame cross bar under where the swingarm mounts and weld a 1 inch piece or what i should do. If anybody has any suggestions it would be much appreciated even if i need to get a different swingarm, my goal is to be able to run 180 tire on the rear so if anyone can help me out on using this swingarm or if you know of another swingarm that will accomplish this it would be appreciated. So as of today i opened up the case on my 750, found out that the cogs on 1st gear were wore, which when i bought the bike the guy i bought it from told me that it made some noise in nuetral, like it was trying to jump into gear. So at least i have figured that out, now the next step it to find out where i can get a new transmission or just that gear, also i am wondering where i can get new bearings for the crank as upon inspection i saw some gouges in the bearings.  If anyone can help me out with this it would be much appreciated. Blasting aluminum is probably best left to the pros: probably glass bead, and lightly.
Paint: use engine paint. I would think the insulative qualities of powder coat will also warm up the engine, especially in black. Engine paints require a good primer for hte bare metal, then the color of your choice: Cuplicolor makes some good ones. Degreasing the eninge first is paramount, though, like maybe taking the cases to an engine shop and have them run them through their "case washers".

Crank bearings: only place I know is Honda. You'll need the colors of the shells, their original positions, or else a manual and the case numbers, plus the rod numbers, plus the crank numbers, and some Plastigage, to figure them back out if they were all removed without marking first. There can easily be up to 3 different thicknesses of shells in one engine.

Are you going to use the original seat, or something else?

I used a set of GSXR 1100K front forks and clamps, the Honda steering stem pressed straight in. It was as easy as that.


43mm and heaps of adjustment.
