weak handlebars - replace?
« on: September 18, 2008, 09:10:43 AM »
My handlebars were indeed bent.  I took everything off and put them in a vice and bent them back.  It was a little too easy.  They seem weak.  They're still plenty strong enough for riding, however, and I suspect I will only have an issue if I have an accident or the bike falls over, in which case they'll be damaged again anyway.

Any opinions on this?  It looks like replacements are hard to come by with the holes for wiring and whatnot.

Not a good idea to use them.  Once they're bent, they are junk, and bending them back only "work hardens" them, making them brittle, and ready to break instead of bending.

You can replace them for $20.00 in your choice of styles and drill new holes to fit.  It is not worth the risk and they are difficult to get back exactly straight.

They bend easily..in fact if the bike goes on its side they will bend if you are not careful how you pick it up.

I would have no qualms about straightening a minor bend, it is quite easy to do. You would have to bend it severely to really damage them.

I ordered NOS from Honda in 99, are they no longer available?
