well, good news bad news. Good news: The exhaust and headers are here. Bad News: One of the inserts to fit headers onto the engine is missing. I'll shoot some quick pictures to illustrate what i mean.

I don't know if the part was lost in the shipment, or the seller accidentally on put three of the four in the shipment. A set of 8 screws were also in the box (free floating) and none of them were lost in shipment. So i am stumped how a the coupling, a large chunk of metal, would have escaped, but the screws managed to reside in the box?

either way, it will all get sorted out.

Whilst awaiting for the several shipments of parts, i began cleaning and buffing corrosion off the forks out of pure boredom and anticipation.

Alright, a few things to note here.

Missing 1 out of the 4 spigots to mount the exhaust ('74) to the engine ('78).

The others match up just fine, BUT when the exhaust is slipped on over the studs, the excess stud overhangs preventing the collars to be slipped up into the proper position (as seen below). My thought is to create an extension that would slip into the header and over the spigot to create extra space for the collar to fit around the spigot. Just the first idea that came into mind.

The next problem that i immediately noticed was the ugly mess concerning the kickstands and the exhaust pipe. its quite the cluster. Any ideas or input on what should be done here?

Last but not least. Clearly, the engine studs are in (sans the missing one) and the spigots fit on just fine, but need nuts in order to be tightened down properly. Leaving me to question, what the heck are the 8 bolts that came with the spigots for if the studs are there? and the bolts clearly will not even reach the threads for the studs when put into the spigot.

So, this is what i'm looking at.

I'm video chatting with Yak right now, and he says that those bolts are the right size....duh.

But the studs are giving him a hard time. How do you get those out if they are perfectly rounded? Vice grips?

Redneck version is fine if you don't mind destroying the studs. Add heat and penetrating oil as necessary.

He actually got them off using the technique droopy explained. I think he cashed in for the night, but he said he is going to get back into it tomorrow. I've been video chatting with him so atleast it feels like I'm there.

i actually didn't cash out for the night, i kept going, i just can't get enough of it.

i managed to take out all but three studs, reason being, i actually stripped the threads off of the nut which i have never seen before. one of them is stuck in really, really well. so i pb blasted them like crazy and called it an evening, im going to run out to the hardware store and grab a few 6mm nuts so i can remove the remaining 3. im sure 2 of the three will come out no problem, just the one.

secondly, i'm going to point a finger here and call myself an idiot. The spigot wasn't seated properly when i tried to match up the hole with the bolts which came with it, hence...im an idiot.

Other question while i'm at it. Does anyone know where to find gaskets for the connection between the oil hoses that come from the tank down to the bottom of the case? one of the connections is leaking like a sieve. ill snap a picture of what i'm referring to tomorrow.

I know we have the K8/F3 Manual, but I'm not sure about the parts list. I don't see a parts list for the K8 specifically though. Would the k5 list be of any use to me or am I missing something?

alright, all but one of the studs have been removed, the last one seems to be seized in there. i've pb blasted it multiple times tapped the end with a mallet to try to loosen it, torqued it, everything. any ideas on how to get it out without tapping it with a bit and backing it out?

other news, pipes are in, missing a spigot, but we have a savior for that as well. the spigots fit on, two of which are screwed on with the headers and pipe coming off, waiting on the other spigot so i can attach the other pipe.

Battery just came in today. tomorrow i'm going to spend my afternoon attempting to get a fire, at which point i will be content.

The other day i re connected all of the electronics but to no avail as i could not get the electric starter to work, nor would the kickstart provide a spark at the plugs. Little did i know, Sheik gave me a minor piece of information when he told me the starter solenoid was shot, would have helped to know that the entire reason the electric starter wasn't working. So by jumping the starter solenoid, the engine will crank, but unfortunately still no spark at the plugs. So from what i've been reading, the spark problem could lay within the range of the spark plugs, the ignition points, or the condenser.

it looks like a battery tender is also going to be in the works as well, considering the current predicament.

any input?

check for voltage at the points and to the coils from the points

Well to be honest the spigot I sent out is not in pristine condition so I would feel wrong taking money for it. It's totally servicable though. Enjoy it in good health, and pay the favor forward if you get the chance.

Besides, it's fascinating watching someone build a bike via video chat.

You have some good friends, that's for sure.

and i work on it daily because i love tinkering with things like this, i could spend an entire week in the garage without leaving. Plus it hasn't nagged me or lectured me like any of my previous relationships, so i'm rather content.
