CB650SC: Adjusting Cam Chain + Carb Sync Tool?
« on: September 19, 2008, 01:12:28 AM »
I'm trying to adjust my Cam Chain. I looked in the Clymer manual, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly. Could someone help me out or provide me with some instruction on how to adjust my chain?

I've also been searching for a Carburetor sync tool, and have come up empty as well.

1982 CB650SC Nighthawk.

Thanks :)

There are basically 2 ways of adjusting the camchain. 1st - as per book, i.e. loosen the bolt, and turn the engine by hand. Should work. Although it didn't work for me couple of times, so I used method 2, from internet - start the engine, keep it at lowest possible idle (max 1000) and then loosen the bolt, let the spring pick up slack, and screw it in. Worked for me very well.

As per carb adjusting - again, either buy it (morgan carbtune, the best) or make it yourself from the pvc tubes and old oil. there's been a lot of posts about it, just google up DIY vacuometer or carb synching tool. I have the home made-version and am very happy with results.

I know on my 750 that there's no way in hell loosening the cam chain would help you while it is running.

Proper tensioning requires that the chain have all available slack which happens at a particular time in the firing sequence.  The manual details this nicely.  On the 750 if you don't tension at this time, you will never be able to apply tension to the cam chain.

I would be surprised if the 650 was different...

Interesting way to adjust cam chain, not sure it would work though, having a 650 myself I know the desperation to get the damn thing adjusted though.
If you don't intend to do a heap of carb syncing I'd take it to a Honda dealer or other bike shop.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I found this method in a scanned article about CB650 maintenance. I will find it and attach it for download.
I agree that this sounds weird, but... short story - not long time after adjusting valves I heard too much klackety-klack. And i though - hmm, impossible, I did the valves, so it must be camchain. I did it the "manual" way, and noise is still there. gosh, that't the valves, I think, so tank down, covers out, and measuring.... All's perfect! So what the hell? Camchain? And out of pure desperation, i thought, what the hell, I will try it - the running method. So I put bike on idle, and rattle is there, I loosen the screw... gone! rattle was gone! So that was it  - weird, but worked for me.
My take on this is  - you have nothing to lose. I mean, if you will keep it at idle nothing critical will happen, in extreme case, just shut it down and set it properly. I say it's worth a try  :D

Sorry! By Carb sync tool I meant carburetor adjusting wrench.

Already have a motionpro mercury-less manometer. Nice looking tool. I just need the adjusting wrench now.

I have cam chain problems (I think) on 78 550k, when I start up it makes some noise, lag?, I also tried adjusting via manual and nothing appeared to change. Mine had a screw and nut. Do you think the "running method" will work for me?

When I loosen the nut should I push the screw in? Turn the screw in?

Also, can you tell by looking at the screw/nut where the adjustment stands? Meaning, no adjustment left, plenty of adjustment left etc.

Any help is much appreciated.

I just removed my spark plugs and for the first time 2 of them were wet and black (guessing gas) as well as 2 of them carbon fouled...

I've seen the carbon fouled plugs before but the wet plugs were a first for this bike. Any idea what's up? The plugs weren't gapped.
