offset footpegs...?
« on: September 15, 2005, 07:37:14 AM »

71/750

when i was stashing the bike yesterday, i looked down and realized that the footpegs are not symmetrical - the left footpeg is set slightly back reletive to the right peg - about 1-2"s...

does anyone know if this is the stock setup for these?

side note: the right footpeg has a "second" position where the footpeg can rotate back - it is then upside down and not useable - does anybody know the purpose of this maneuver?...it appears the left footpeg also has this function, but the pipe or engine casing is in the way on that side.

doesn't seem to affect my riding, just curious...

p.s. - has anyone done forward foot controls on their 750? i'm interested in doing this (maybe) but it seems like the engine would block one from making this mod - your feet would end up outside the end of the block???

thanks for any answers y'all have - i am really enjoying reading up on things and getting all of your humor and advice is great!

Same thing on my K0.

As for the pegs pivoting back, I always assumed it was a little extra protection for r-e-a-l-l-y agressive cornering/leaning. Better to have the peg pivot back on ground contact than pogo the bike. Could be wrong, but couldn't figure out any other purpose.

"Sounds like someone removed them and put the rubber on upside down."

Nope, pegs are actually offset as described. I believe it's a design issue related to the postion of the gearbox cover, shift lever pivot point and length of the shift lever if done another way.

ah, now this makes sense... i have electric start and have never had to deal with the issue...but yes, the pegs are def. offset.

so, where can i go to find out about forward controls...?   it seems like kind of a hassle unless you were going to chop'er down. maybe highway bars are the ticket...

anyone???

Sochiro Honda had one leg shorter than the other and so built prototypes with off-set pegs. The Honda engineers assumed this was for some universal reason and just kept that design for many years. Whenit was discovered that the off-st was useless, they decided to keep it as a sort of quiet memorial to Mr. Honda.

For highway pegs, install engine guards and JCWhitney accessory pegs to the guards. I read ballet dances use this set-up because it helpd keep them limber. In hot weather, it also has the added benefit of keeping your crotch cool.     Cuts down on gas mileage, though...

Funny - I always noticed this on the 1977 CB750K, but never had the balls to ask why  ;D  I'm pretty sure my 1976 CB550F's pegs are aligned, but I'll have to look again!

Hey Unc
I`ll never forget the days of highway pegs and bell bottoms.

I'm glad someone cleared this up, I kept thinking one of my legs was crooked...  :P

that's interesting. i assumed the '78 750F my wife picked up and we road across the country had non-stock footpegs thrown on it that didn't line up.

makes the shifter a bit farther from my toes than i care for, but was not uncomfortable at all.  was planning on swapping them for something symmetrical, hadn't occured to me that this could be the design from the factory.

I move the footpegs on my 350 to the rear axle. I could steer the bike that way. Yup, two wheel steering. Again, I was younger and dumber then.
