Unsiezing an engine?
« on: September 19, 2008, 03:44:30 AM »
Ok as i have mentioned in another thread i have gotten a rebuilt CB550F engine from my roommate. However it sat for a brief time without the header and carbs on it so it is currently siezed. On the upside is that it has only been like this for 2 months at the max because it was left outside when we had some bad rainstorms. What is the easiest way to free the engine in this case?

I have had good luck:

remove sparlplugs
remove left and right crankshaft covers (stator, points)
Fill each cylinder full of ATF, Marvel Mystery oil, any thin penetrating oil, with tube & funnel
let sit 1-3 days
try to crank with starter direct to battery
try to turn with kick starter (usually inneffective)
try to rock with stator or points bolt (be very gentle)
try both electic starter and stator bolt at same time for short periods to not stall and overheat starter
If it is still stuck, warm the cylinders in the ring area of each with a propane torch
If it is still stuck. tap the top of the highest piston lightly with a wood dowel & hammer
Any and all combinastions of the above have freed my engines.  One had sat for 5 years with no sparkplugs outside.  I had to remove the leaves from ontop the engine to put the oil in.
Good luck (prayer helps)

I'd go along with the soak and leave myself.
Should still be a runner if only 2 months out of service.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I agree with the King up there, but you might consider substituting PB Blaster.  You can find it at Ace Hardware, Autozone, etc.  Worked well for me on an engine that had been sitting since '97.  Just don't be in a big hurry.  Also, you can probably expect it'll need a bore job after it's loose.

ive seen people use very mild acids in the past works in minutes thats if the rings are rusted to the bores, It would prob be wise to ease the barrels off and check the rings and clean out any rust that migt scratch the pistons and bores.
