Yo Hondaman,
Well... if he tore up his shoulder and 'some vertebrae' and doesn't have much more brain damage than the rest of us,  I'd venture to guess the vertebrae may be in his lower c-spine which is tied to his phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm. If that's pinched/damaged, one can stop breathing...  Vagus nerve can make one bradycardic, too...  I really dunno, but it is possible.  It's kinda scary how tough and fragile people can be at the same time.

...or Mark could just be into drama. ;)  It's ok, Mark, I won't take that from you.  ;D

Let me know if there's anything I can do for you up here in PDXish.

i'm sure mark can clarify, but his mother did tell me at one point that the reason he had the trach is because his diaphragm was injured... you may just be right. maybe you should become a diagnostician instead?

Kit's been keeping me up to date on this for quite some time. I'm so glad to hear you are firmly on the road to recovery. Just hang in there, listen to your docs and PT, push it a little (but not too much) and believe that each day you will have progress. Progress can come at a painful price sometimes, both physical and emotional. You will have some bad days where you may want to just give up and others where you'll want to throttle "the world" for your bad luck. That's part of the journey too. There are stages and we all go through them when hit with something life changing like this. You are allowed to get angry and do the "why me?" thing, but then use that to push yourself further. You'll do just fine with your family and all of these great people encouraging you along the way. The fact that you are doing as well as you are is proof you are as tough as they come. Stubborn is a good trait in this case.  ;D

Good luck to you. I'm sure Kit will keep me posted and when you get back to PDX, let us know what we can do to help you settle back in. I don't know if you want the likes of us working on your cycle though...  ::) ;D We do, however, have skills that may benefit you in some way. Don't be afraid to speak up.

Take care,

~X.  :)

The whole thing by Mark just spooks me! I was thinking of giving him points for it (speaking as an ex-racer who got off more times than I'd ever mention, as speeds most riders whisper about...), like a "9" because he needed a bit more form to prevent the neck damage, or "8.5" because the off-bike ride was fast enough, but he tried to move that 4x4 without tools...  ;D

Hey Kit,
Actually, it was c4, c5 and c12.
I think I stopped breathing because the impact actually tore the full helmet off my head, with the strap intact. Throat damage from that, probably. I hit my head first on the post at 65ish mph, then my back and shoulder.

No drama here  8)

Yo Hondaman,

/edit: Oh yeah, thought you might find this interesting.
I was in ICU for 2 weeks. Thats a long time for ICU.
First, they OD'd me by 4 times too much of some blood pressure, heavy duty pill. Made my blood pressure so low I almost died. They took me off of it too fast once my Mom pointed it out to them, almost died from a heart attack, blood pressure was so high, and heartbeat was 135+.
Then they screwd up an EMG schedule, and didnt feed me for 6 days..... and were going to wait another 2 or 3  days.... Mom said she would carry me out of there and sue... They took care of it, and started following her wishes. She moved to seattle and took care of me every day in the hospital. I'm pretty sure I'd be dead if she wasn't there.
Will tell more as I have the energy.

My Gosh Mark, As if it wasn't bad enough with the wreck and all, then you have to deal with the hospital too! ::) You really hope that when you are in a Doctor's (and/or a hospital's) care, you should be able to relax and let them get you back in good health. :(  Sure glad your Mom was there and took things in hand. ;) You take care of yourself Mark and I'll catch you later on,  Bill ;)

#$%* man, I didn't realise you probably had more issues with the hospital than the crash.
I had a neck injury several years ago,(ruptured airway below vocal chords, surgical emphysema caused by buckle on helmet strap)
I couldn't even wear a crash helmet for 18 months and couldn't buckle it up for about another year after that (which really sucked as I was a workshop manager in a Suzuki/Yamaha dealers at the time, no test rides for me)
Will your back recover or are you going to have fused disc's? (my sister has recently had  second op to fuse more discs together, originally caused by a bike crash 20 yrs ago)
She kept riding for years afterward but hasn't been able to get on her bike for last 4 yrs (Kawasaki GPZ 600)
Good luck with the recovery, I really hope you can get back to 'normal'

PJ, minor permanent damage to my vertabae, strangely. They are a bit shorter than they were originally. Also a bit narrower. They did put out quite a bit of bits of bone, which is why the doctors were a bit amazed I wasn't paralized.
Hondaman, I don't know what to say. Thanks so much.

Mark, I sure didn't mean to insinuate that your Mother has to take over because you couldn't handle it. Guess I didn't word that right. I just was trying to say that it was a shame that they couldn't keep things straight with the meds and all.
