Motorcyclist Retro magazine
« on: September 19, 2008, 01:27:37 PM »
Did they quit publishing?  I saw an issue at the bookstore months ago.  Went back to the same bookstore and looked for a newer issue and customer service said they don't carry the magazine.

The staff of the magazine paid us a visit here at Orient Express when the magazine first came out. I believe this will be published quarterly, unless it really takes off. When your first issue features the SOHC 750, where can you go from there?

I just saw an ad in the latest Motorcyclist saying they are going to go bi-monthly (I think) and offer subscriptions. The second newstand issue should be out around now according to the last issue?

Mitch, the author and publisher is a member over on the Kawasaki Triples board. The 2nd issue is out and they are going into full subscription for 2009. Enough people stepped-up and said yes - so we get our own US version of a classics motorcycle magazine. Please go out and buy it and help support the start-up company. He is on his own and will be doing most of the articles.

I liked what he said about the magazine - it is 70% editorial and 30% ads. Most are 50/50 or worse -He is really trying hard to give us good value and cover our interest. I'll be picking up a few copies for myself and friends, plus will be a subscriber for sure.

If you haven't read the first one, it is a very good read with some awesome photos.

Gordon

I feel very strongly that these folks should interview you and get some photos of your bikes. You represent the essence of what we believe in regarding these classics. It would be great to see your fleet with a great story line in the pages of this mag. Boy....I could take those guys on a tour......not all mine like you but......I know some guys. ;) ;) ;D

I think it was a brilliant marketing move to not have subscriptions for the first year.  I would sign up in a second, but rarely buy magazines at the store. ???

Got mine at Barnes and Noble. I don't know if that's a nation wide operation though.

I had a hard time finding the first issue a couple months ago, but just found the second one at our local grocery store (Giant Eagle). The second issue is better then the first!! Great stuff!

Hey tank, I bought mine at Books A Million. Not sure where else, maybe Hastings has it too. Worth a shot.

Gordon, I second Bill's notion of getting some of your bikes in there.  An article on your Black Bomber alone would get him A LOT of readers.

fastbroshi, I appreciate your second, but Mike (MRieck) brought it up and I can't take credit for having the idea. It sure would be nice to see Gordon and his bikes in there though. ;)

I agree - let's all buy the paper version. I think Mitch and his start-up will benefit more. I have enjoyed his editing for many years as part of Motorcyclist.

Mike, Bill, thanks for the complements. I collect and restore these old pieces because they were such a big part of my life 30+ years ago and I flat enjoy them. He's on the West Coast and it is not practical for him to make his way here for photography. Maybe when I get my 1974 Water Buffalo done, he'd be interested in comparing examples of the Kawasaki and Suzuki 3 cylinder, 2-strokes side by side. and I'll throw in the Bomber history to boot. Too bad I don't have a 1973/74 TX750 Yamaha and then my K4 is too strong for a fair comparison - else a "battle of the Japanese 45's" would be possible.

Probably it is not a marketing move, but simple common sense not to offer subscriptions until they know the potential market. Once they know the sales figure, they will know whether the magazine will go on or halt.

I guess it is good for you in the US to have your "local" classic bike magazine, but I swear for "classic motorcycle mechanics". The perfect blend between classic bikes and technical stuff, with many rebuild articles spread along a full year or more.

Hi ya'll

Just a quick note to say that issue 2 is on newsstands now (list below) and at a variety of dealers across the country. Issue two features the '73 Z1 and Elsinore 250, along with features on Malcolm Smith, the Primm MX Collection, a huge Roger DeCoster poster, and a whole host of '70s-era bikes and culture.

Issue three will be out in December. And we'll be offering subscriptions for '09 on our soon-to-be-up website, www.motorcyclistretro.com. We'll be bi-monthly (6x/yr) in '09, and if all goes well, monthly in 2010.

Issue three will feature Yamaha's RD350, Honda's XR75 and Dream 305, Penton's 40th Anniversary, Jim Pomeroy's most famous cross-up, and a host of vintage stuff.

Thanks for all the support so far...you guys have been key players in our early success, and I'd like to say thanks.
