i want to clean my snotty motor
« on: September 20, 2008, 10:05:53 AM »
Hey
I bought two '77 cb750k's earlier this summer neither of them running, put them together and what do you know.
So now that I have reclaimed this beast from the afterlife I want to clean it up a little. This is the first engine that
I have ever brought back from the dead and I am pretty proud of myself especially because I did it with no help and very little money. Anyhow, I love this bike and it rides great but is ugly as can be. Through the winter I plan on getting the tank painted, making some leather side covers and a leather seat cover. Anything chrome on it will be polished and with a few modifications and replacement parts it's gonna look sweet.
My question to you veterans is how in the heck do I clean all the grime and years and years of dirt off the engine.
I want to do it inexpensively and without removing the engine. I'm nervous to remove the engine because when I removed the engine from my parts bike I broke an engine mount.
any suggestions?
thanks

I spray them down with mineral spirits after blocking all possible entry points.  Scrub with a nylon stiff brush, Simple Green works good after that on fuel stains and light grime, and then soapy water and a blast air dry.  I spray all the fluids with one of those siphon air gun thingies. Final touch up with chrome polish, paint, and some drops of lube here and there on the carbs and clutch cable etc....
