Topic: Is it safe to use a water rediator as an oil sooler?

I have a radiator from water cooled bike, and was wondering if it is going to be able to handle the PSI of the oil system.

Planning on running a larger than normal cooler on my next motor as it will be a BIG overbore for the motor.

The motor is getting a set 5.2mm larger than stock pistons.
Bike is a cb650

Coolant radiators will typically handle 20 to 25 psi MAX, the cap is rated at what..16psi?  That said, what pressure can you expect in the oil system?  That should tell you.

This one has a radiator cap not directly located on the radiator.
It is mounted about 2 inches away by hose.

I really didn't know the range that a radiator handled pressure.
I'll have to find a larger oil cooler.

Use a car transmission cooler if your trying to find one cheap or take a look at the ones fitted to Suzuki Katana's and early GSX-R. (600 Katana will probably be more than large enough, it has minimal finning on cylinder and head because it's an oil cooled motor) Modified GSX-R 1100 puts out 150bhp+, stock coolers are fine to 150bhp (around 110bhp for 600/750 coolers)
You don't need to go stupidly large on cooler unless your going to be spending a lot of time at slow speeds in traffic

I have a oil cooler from a 600 ninja and it should work fine.
I want the added protection of a larger cooler.
If I use a smaller cooler, i think I might just go with a temp sensor and a fan.

The oil needs to be running at 212~230 degrees F to boil off water vapour and other combustion byproducts.
 If oil is too cool it will form acids which will destroy bearings etc.
 If you use synthetics they are 'safe' to around 350deg, conventional dyno oils start breaking down around 270~320 depending on base stock and additives

Yeah I know that i want to stay within the norm operating temps, thats what the sensor would be for.
Have the temp sensor turn the fan on once the temps get over 300 or so, turn it off under 250.

With a 65mm overbore in a stock 59.8mm motor i'm thinking heat will be a killer in traffic on a hot day.

The major problem is going to be piston crowns overheating. ALL modern sport bikes have oil jets directed at bottom of pistons to help cool crowns from underneath. Unless you can figure out how to rig something thats going to be limiing factor.

They are trying to warn you about, overcooled oil, if you go too large on the cooler.. not overheating..

Look at the size of the lines.. if you are way smaller, I dont think it will work properly anyway..

The mid-90s Explorers have a much nicer example.
