Two Lane Blacktop
« on: September 21, 2008, 01:54:13 PM »
So I have netflix now and it is great. I am getting caught up on all the classic movies I've always wanted to see.

I just got done watching two movies that I thought were really damn good.

The Word's Fastest Indian. That old fart was real inspiring. I really enjoyed the movie. I was happy to see all the people helping him out to live out his life long dream, also his persistance and refusal to give up.

Two Lane Blacktop. This movie was rad. If you have not seen it, see it. James Taylor, Mr. Time in a Bottle is a bad ass in this movie. Really hard core.

This is the best clip I could find.... you go James...

The other guy is (was, RIP) Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. 'Time In A Bottle' was Jim Croce though.

Awesome cult flick. the '55 was the very same car as used in 'American Graffiti'. It had a 427 and I think a tunnel ram.

I have this in my collection and now that you bring it up I'll have to watch it again. ;D

See 'American Graffiti' if ya haven't!!

Check out "On Any Sunday" if you can...it's an awesome motorcycle racing movie... ;)

Your right, I don't know why I always think that Time in a Bottle is James Taylor. Dennis Wilson and Darryel Oats was GTO, great flick.

James Taylor, Bad Bad Leroy Brown....

Okay, I did some research. How sweet it is to be loved by you...

Haha. That's still funny. He was a love song singer and got addicted to heroin and played a bad ass in two lane blacktop.

I had to laugh because right after my last post I was in my car and heard 'How Sweet it is to be Loved By You'. Yeah he had some real mushy songs... a contrast to today's music about somebody being a pimp and busting a cap in somebody bla bla...

I was/am a real Beach Boys fan too. Not much singin' about ho's and gin and juice in their lyrics either.

Yeah for sure. Though I'm a Pink Floyd fan. I like a lot of the classic stuff man. Mr. Cash. Elvis, Jerry Lee, Bill Hayley. Then move to the other side with the beatles and the yardbirds and all them. Oh yeah.

I'm not a Floyd fan, although definitely talented lads, Nick Mason is a huge gear head and races vintage cars. Pick up an issue of 'Octane'... in it he writes a (very good) regular column. It's my fav mag.

IMO, 'Rock around The Clock' is Rock n Roll! It's so pure and it absolutely jumps!

Love Rock a Billy, R&B, Soul, old Jazz... and Classical! ;D

Two Lane Blacktop was going to be such a hit that Esquire Magazine printed the whole script in a preview issue. The only problem was it was done in the late 1960's style where people spoke very little and silence was supposed to mean something. It was the European style done badly by an American. It is not a very good film as films from the era go, but is is a snapshot of the time I grew up in. American Graffiti is about as good as they get.

I agree, 'Blacktop isn't the pinnacle of film making but it is a great cult film. Unfortunately too many 'car' flicks are in this category.

'Graffiti is in a class by it self.

I agree it was done badly but I think a lot of movies have these quirks. Like they are trying to mimic some style of film and just don't quite pull it off. I thought Two Lane Blacktop was a really good flick though. I liked the lack of talking. I enjoyed the camera angles from the back seat so all you see is the right side of the back of Jame's head and the left side of Brian's head and then the road. It's no masterpiece but I really really enjoyed it.

I read the whole Esquire magazine script BobbyL spoke of as soon as it came out. 1972 IIRC.
Before I even saw the movie.

I thought it was awesome.

My entire senior year in high school, I wanted to build a 55 with a 427 and drive cross-country. Good thing I had no money.

Should have been studying algebra/trig/biology/history...
Oh yeh, we even had a semester of communism.

A friend of mine who shared my American Graffiti  fantasies bought a '55 with a dropped solid axle and a tilt 'glass nose and radiused rear arches (like the movie car) and had a blown 454 from his pro street Camaro installed.

Then he got married and the Chevy went bye bye.

I lost all respect for him. :-\
