Spray Paint Brand?
« on: September 18, 2008, 08:23:54 AM »
Hey guys,
What brand of Spray paint do you use? What colors do you recommend for primer? I'm about to paint mine and just wanted some suggestions.

Mmm, rattle cans.

Green (self etching) primer is what I use. For paint, I like duplicolor. I think duplicolor is the main recommendation you'll get.

I've had real nice results with high temp duplicolor for doing side covers.

Autozone carries a good selection of Dupicolor.  Might be a different auto shop depending on your location.

I have had bad luck with Krylon. It didn't want to completely dry/cure so I had some nice tacky paint that easily scraped away, even after a week or two.

+1 on Duplicolor

They make a "sandable primer" in black and red and grey.  Then you'll want to use their "primer/sealer" before you top coat your prep work.

Duplicolor is definatly the way to go. I use it for priming rust spots on the folks cars. I also use it on my bike. I use Sikkens automotive paint for color but that is just because I work in a place where I have access to all the painting crap I need, but yeah any duplicolor is good rattlecan material.

Autozone, O Reilley's, I believe Advance Auto Parts has it. No more Checker or Kragen lol, big O bought them out.

Duplicolor and Krylon are actually made by the same company...but yes they are different paints lol.

I've never had any problems with Krylon...as a matter of fact I did an entire RX7 temporarily with their semi-gloss black and it came out fantastic. No issues with dry times or anything. I even keep a spare can around for small brackets and stuff I don't want to have to get my paint gun out for.

EDIT: Any NAPA store will also carry both.

Wait, you guys are painting your bike's tank and side covers with this stuff?  I'm curious, what do the finished products look like?

I did the side cover, the chain guard, the handle bars the rear fender and back of the head light with just a black duplicolor high temp primer, yes i powder coated it after but the flat black look was almost better.

My problem with Krylon isn't so much the paint as it is the spray tip that they put on their cans.  It makes a quite narrow fan pattern so that it's hard to cover larger areas with even coats of paint.

The Duplicolor spray tip has a much wider fan pattern.

So you do all of this with store-bought duplicolor.  Hmm.....Sounds interesting.  I may have to do some trial work with this stuff.
How many coats of the paint do you lay on?  I assume by clear you mean just a clear coat?

I won't argue that! It may have been a defective can or just the type of paint I had (I can't remember at this point). Anyway, one bad experience gave me enough reason to stick to the Duplicolor.

The Duplicolor spray tip has a much wider fan pattern.

Well what are you spraying? Just so you know Krylon and Duplicolor aren't fuel resistant.

I think you need to wait 'till it cures.  Otherwise the clear cote will not let the color cote cure completely.

Dupli color is the best thing going in a rattlle can.  Preperation is 85% of the paint job...research on the net, there is so much info.  Tanks pose a different problem; as you will spill gas regardless of your intentions.  Rattle cans have no prayer as todays gas.... it contains a lot of nasty ass crap that does 40 year old parts/seals no good.  Pretty soon these bastards won't run at all on the piss they pass as gas.  I have a 4 and a 5 year old and have 4 antiques out of 5 bikes...they will all go silent soon.  My kids come out every time I light one off...think about it....?!  They will go away ...and it will be sooner rather than later.  I almost recked my 90 civic Si into a vintage 750 with original pipes(4 into 4's with little rot)  I saw the paint, the seat, the tank and the original gators on the forks.  I am in uniform(law enforcement...don't hold it against me) and trying to figure out how I can offer to buy this steed after 15 seconds of watching it run.  Meanwhile the poor bastard thinks I am a dickhead cop trying to jam him up for something....in reality , I want a red light long enough to ask him to sell it to me!  These bikes are aging exponentially with respect to our current perspective of time...don't let them go...ashes to ashes....we will all end up from whence we came.   Sorry...don't mean to be so miserable.  My work is chalenging at best; it can beat you down if you let it...apparentley I have let it!  Jesus, what was the question????  Been dormant for a while, perhaps I should go back to that status...you guys rock....Bryan
