Please help this noob with pricing and identifying (pics inside)
« on: September 20, 2008, 07:27:04 PM »
Hi,
I am new to the CB750 world and looking forward to learning to restore these bikes.

I am currently shopping for a 69-76 cb750 and have a local guy that has this bike available. He says its a 1973 cb750k, but there seems to be non-73 parts on it. He says it's a runner. Let me know your thoughts and what you would be willing to pay for it.
Thanks!!

The pipes are from a 77 or 78 750, the rear signals, seat and probably other things are aftermarket.

How new are the tires?  How are the forks, the swingarm, the steering bearings, the gas tank, the carbs?

When was it last ridden?  When was it last inspected?

Ridden this year, inspected this year with the modifications that I can see with no immediate bearing or swingarm work needed would put that bike at $600 to $1200 here in Maine.

If many of those things are questionable, it has not run in a while, and it needs new tires -- this would put the bike in the range of $400 to $800

Around here it is more than I would pay.

More important though is your market and its supply & demand. It helps to tell where you are.

A lot of buyer perhaps could not tell what is incoreect on that one.

My green 73 came out of Edmonton actually... mabe that is its brother..

I am from Edmonton, Alberta.

We do have some cb750's flow through the area and I know this bike is more than what I am willing to pay. I am trying to find a realistic counter-offer, letting him know approximately/realistically what this bike is worth.

I would not pay more than 1g for it and that is only if it is a runner with good compression. A bike you can ride home.
If you want to restore it you have some good bones and could sell off the pipes and the seat and get a stock set-up.
Good luck
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

I can give you my personal opinion if that helps....

The bike appears to be in good running shape overall - I'd pay $1200 - 1600 depending on some of the mechanical details.  In excellent condition this bike might be worth $4000 - $5000.

Mechanical details such as compression, transmission noise would make/break this deal for me.

Tank repair, side cover and emblems will be costly items.  Tank repair and professional paint with decals and emblems - I'd guess upwards of $800, Side cover, paint and emblems - I'd guess another $250.

If pipes are in good condition that is a major plus as new pipes of that same kind would be about $800 - $1300.

Lights are a nice aftermarket replacement and not '73 but if they work, that would save you about $200+

Speedo gauge shows kilometers, which means this is a later K3 (as opposed to one that shipped in 1972) or a speedo that has been replaced.  If gauges are in good shape as the speedo appears to be that a plus.  Replacement can be costly but varying widely in cost ($50 - $300 per gauge) depending on how new it is.

Re&re brake job runs about $200 with parts.  Re&Re Steering bearings about $150.  Oil filter and synthetic oil - $50.  New OEM seat - $400.

Tyres vary widely in cost.  In Alberta expect to pay anywhere from $90 to $300 per tyre (average about $125) depending on manufacturer.

Hope this helps.
