Can anyone tell me about carb sync tools? I bought the Motion Pro Sync Pro and I'm wondering if I made a mistake and should have gotten real vacuum gauges.

Basically I assembled it per the instructions; restrictors in the tubes, turn out the adjusters, hook up the manifold, plug it into the vacuum port of 1 to attempt calibration, start bike. Immediately the first 2 tubes fluid suck up into the hose and the other 2 are way high. Looks like the fluid is a goner for those two.

Did I do it wrong? The restrictors are in and level in the hose. I even cut them out and placed them again? WTH? Did I throw a $100 away on this tool? Anyone have experience with this gauge?

The guys at MotionPro suggest using a hemostat when hooking it all up and if they're cheap enough I will or I'll just rig something up (fingers? ) and also are sending out some replacement fluid but I'd like to not repeat the mistake if I don't have to.

I know this is old but I wish I had read it before throwing away $100 on this useless gauge. No matter what I do the fluid gets sucked out of mine. Either my bike has magical suction powers or this thing is crap!

I have a 100 dollar EBAY vacuum gauge kit and it is awesome. It dramatically reduced engine noise associated with the carbs being out of sync, as well as smoothing out my lumpy idle. It is easy to hook up and comes in a nice blow molded case. Since these bikes require constant attention (especially if you bought a non running bike like I did) it is definitely worth the 100 dollar investment. I will surely use this tool more than once making it worth more than what I paid for it. I have spent FAR more for tools off the MAC and Snap On truck, and this tool is equal in quality. I got mine from Sin City Cycle Parts and the shipping was incredibly fast and fairly prices.

You can contact Motion Pro about refills for the liquid. They sell refill kits.

Make sure that you have your idle at the correct speed. High RPM's cause excessive vacuum. Don't crack the throttle either. You need to install those restrictors in the hoses also.

That tool is garbage. $100 wasted on my part. I got the free fix kit from them because it was broke when I got it. It was better after the fix kit but still junk. Love the vacuum gauges I got.

For anyone in Canada looking for gauges...Princess Auto has nice vacuum gauges on sale for $14 each. They come with restrictors and tubing and all four of mine read exactly the same when I hooked them up together. Will sync my carbs tomorrow with them and report back.

Morgan Carbtune all the way. Never a problem and carbs are right on the money. All the bikes run great after a nice sync. Check it out...

You're correct, you are supposed to blip the throttle to make sure that all of the slides return to their normal position to get a true reading. The problem that I've noticed is that some people don't know the difference between blip & WOT. I've used Motion Pro mercury sticks both at home, and when I was a mechanic at the Motorcycle shop that I co-owned. They are the most accurate gauges that I have ever owned. Maybe the kind that you are using are a different style from mine. The set I have is about 17 years old.

I also have a set of early 70's Honda mechanical gauges that are absolutely worthless. The mechanical gauges bounce around so bad that there is no way to get any sort of accurate reading from them at all. Since they are still in the original box, they make a good conversation piece though.

The Motion Pro I have has blue fluid not mercury. It was sucking it up without blipping the throttle. It was setup per their instructions.

if you use guages you must have a damper valve to control the pulses,like these have.

click on the dime city ones and enlage the picture,those also read pressure,i hope they can be calibrated because at rest two are showing different?in fact three if you look close at the most left one just out of view,look at the tail end of the index pointer.

mine are different at rest too but read pretty much the same when each is hooked up to the same cylinder.

I think we should do a FAQ on the Motion Pro system to keep guys from wasting their money on them. I have seen this problem numerous times and hate to see you guys spending money on those problematic systems. There are a number of units out there that will work and the Morgan keeps coming up as one of the best. No affilation to the company, just a dang reliable unit.

the motion pro tool must be synced EVERYTIME you use it ..(if you turn the bike off you have to sync the tool again)

you hook all 4 hoses up to a splitter, so all 4 hoses are run to the same carb (it comes with it) and sync the tool on the one carb , then it's ready to be hooked up to all 4 carbs

it's a serious pain in the ass , had i known this before hand i wouldn't have gotten it either ...BUT .. after you do all that nonsense it works great for me anyway ... i can rev the bike all i want

the mercury motion pro i used to have worked great ... i miss it

did you hold the tool vertical (upright) or lay it down at all? that might make a bit of difference.

Hooked up my $14 vacuum gauges tonight and they worked perfect. These come with built in restrictors so there bounce in the needles.

No 2 cylinder was 1/3 what the others were so its no surprise my bike idles and runs much better now.

Anyone want to buy a SyncPro for half price?

I love my gauges;they are German made & marketed by the PCCC Co.
I purchased them when I first went into my M/C repair business.
I have found the best way to get a lasting Synch is to adjust the carbs.
complete i.e. matching All float levels,cleaning All individual pods,clearing All
carb. vents,etc. Timing - spot on, Valve adj., etc. , etc. It's alot of labor,but
when you take your time and apply plenty of TLC to ea. area...THEN when you
synch your carbs..well, the synch will hold for many more miles. I think that
the synch will stay on the carbs that way, while the valve adj.,timing,etc. will
be the things that need to be adjusted in a preventative manner.

You really can gain good ground in all around performance from your stock
set ups w/o any mods by just keeping ahead of the battle w/ fine tuning.

LISTEN TO THIS MAN! you're definitely right, a sync is the last thing you want to do.
