Pls. school me on rear shocks
« on: October 10, 2008, 11:14:28 AM »
newbie question again (yes did a search, but not too many answers)

CB750 K4 with stock front shocks. I'm in the market for new rear dampener or shocks. Knowing nothing about these, I hear a lot here about Progressive shocks and a few words about Ohlins.

I'll be mostly riding solo and occasionally with my wife. I love the look of the Ohlins with the little reservoir. I do care about performance.

What are the differences? Which ones are adjustable? What are the weaknesses of one vs. another? Basically what's the difference.

If I go with the Ohlins, who do you suggest I buy it from and exactly what model/size do I need for my usage?

Many thanks in advance.

You can spend from $50 to $400+ on rear shocks......

Unless its a serious canyon carver or a Track bike....

You prolly don't need res. shocks. Yeah they look cool but seriously the frame aint really all that stiff or set up for performance.

A good set of progressives should hook you up just fine.

True, it's not going to track. Choice of Ohlins with reservoir is more for the theme/look I'm going. So which one do you suggest from either brand? I really need  detailed help on this. These are the ones and the look I'm after.

Also while we are at it, can you tell me; Is that a 16" rim? And what size tire that may be?

Straight from Carpy's site.

BTW...Thank you so much for always being the first responder.....man I appreciate it so much. If you ever decided to build a Cobra, let me know...Lol....That's all I know how to build. ;D

those shocks are from a cb900f or 1100f... got a pair on my 750.  However, because they are only available used, its usually not the way to go (I still haven't had a problem,  but I got lucky and found a pair practically NOS ~ they're still 25 years old).
But I'm with you, the look is cool and thats why I have em  :)

As far as the rim, pretty sure thats a 16"  width... maybe 140??

+ 1 on the CB1100/CB900 shocks being a gamble - I bought 2 Ebay sets - both leaky...and they dont work with the stock 4-4 exhaust.

Buy what you can afford....I got the Progressive 412s....smooth ride now  ;)

good luck

You are gonna need Eye-to-clevis mounts on the rear shocks. Not the Eye-to-Eye pictured.

I don't know the suppliers name, but I've used those black bodied, black spring, black cover shocks before and they're sprung for a goldwing but sold for every Honda with a clevis mount within a certain range of length.  They were rough on my 750 and I weighed over 200lbs at the time; they must feel like struts on a 350F with a 160lb rider.  I called Progressive, told them my weight, the bike's weight, and riding style and got a recomendation on spring rate.  I then picked out shocks that seemed good for me, assembled them myself and now the rear suspension on my bike works great a couple hundred bucks later.  If you want Ohlins, I'd call them and get their recomendation.
