Shifter Cover Oil Leak
« on: September 23, 2008, 06:10:42 PM »
Hey Everyone
My '77 750k has started leaking oil from the shifter cover. The first time it happened was when my buddy took it for a ride and
adjusted the throttle stop screw so that the idle was way way too high. When he got it back he put it on the side stand and wrenched the throttle a few times and it started gushing oil. The oil was coming from the second screw up between the shifter cover and the dyno cover.
There is a little recess there at that screw. Until I turned off the engine oil was even leaking from the center screws that hold the field coil to the dyno cover.
It only leaks oil when the bike is in neutral and only when it is on the side stand. Or at least that is the only time I have noticed.
I assumed that it was just the gasket (which I haven't replaced yet) but I started reading some old posts here and I see that it could be a number of things.

1. started after friend adjusted stop screw without knowing what it was
2. came from second screw up in mission cover and from field coil screws(only the first time)
3. now only leaks from the bottom between the two left side covers
4. sometimes just drips and sometimes gushes and sometimes not at all
5. only leaks when bike is on side stand and only when in neutral

what am i looking at here?
any thoughts?
thanks

Remove the cover and start her up to see the exact location of the leak.  The drip vs. gushing could be a pressurized case due to a plugged vent with oil pooling on the left side when on the stand.  Whatever it is, it will be fairly simple and inexpensive in that area.

I had the same problem.  It was leaking between those 2 side covers onto my exhaust.  It was the rubber grommet seal in the stator cover that the stator wires run through.  You can not replace that grommet, but mine needed some sealant on that rubber.  Below is a picture of where my problem was and I hope yours is that simple.  Good luck with it.

that makes sense Johnie. I replaced the stator cover a few months ago. the grommet may not be seated right. I also replaced the wire harness and may have given those wires a tug. thanks.

call me a moron but i can't for the life of me figure out where the crankcase breather is on my engine. remember i am new to
working on bikes or any engine for that matter so take it easy. where is my crankcase breather?

Back of the engine below the rear engine mount bolt, about the middle.
