Tell me about the CB650
« on: November 01, 2008, 10:21:11 PM »
I'm going to look at this http://sandiego.craigslist.org/ssd/mcy/902296677.html pair of 650s tomorrow and would like some ideas on what specifically to look for on these models.

I'm figuring on buying both, fixing the titled one and parting the other one.

If anyone has any pointers for problem areas to watch out for I'd really appreciate it.

One question for certain, can you replace that square headlight with a round one from a different Honda? I love the 80's look, just not feeling it with that headlight though.

They were the last gasp for the SOHC up to I think 1981? After that they went to two cam.

Check the FAQ section here and it'll give you an overview.

I'm going to have to check the FAQ. I didn't even look to see how many cams they had. I assumed they were all SOHC.

I've been looking around a bit more. They seem to be DOHC and shaft drive. Not what I was expecting to look at at all. I thought it was along the same lines as any other SOHC bike.

Sorry for putting the thread in the wrong spot!

Also, search around here as there's been tons of discussions covering the under appreciated 650 lately. It's an out growth of the 550  with head improvements just to name one.

those two are the first year for the dohc in the 650.  you can mount a round head lamp on them without much effort. in fact i'd be more than willing to trade you the head light bucket and related parts off my 650 for a set of those square ones, mine works fine, but i've got a pair of really nice hid conversion lamps but their square. pm me if your interested

No idea about the DOHC 650's, but all the SOHC's i've ridden and fixed were nice.
Still have 2 of them in fact.

And yes they are under appreciated IMO...

No real aftermarket support, but since they are not uber popular (like the ebay "sandcast" parts are) you can fix one pretty cheaply, if you can find the part(s).

There was an ad in my area a couple weeks ago for two sohc 650's for little cheese. If I hadn't just got into the 550, I might have picked up those two as well...
