Stupid Oil change question
« on: April 13, 2005, 09:07:20 PM »
I feel a bit dumb, but here goes.  Nver changed the oil on this CB750K8 before doing complete restoration. Ready to go now!

Manual says 3.5 liters for oil change. I can only get in 2 and reservoir is almost full.
I haven't started bike yet because tank is out for paint tll Friday.  Do I need to start the bike for a second or two, turn it off and then add the rest?

P.S.I have already added a bit to oil filter housing as well.

Once you start it up, the level in the oil tank will go down.  Just changed my oil and filter in my 750 K8 last week and I was only able to get 3 quarts in the tank.  Had to start it up and let it run for a second before I could top it off.

Greets,
According to Honda 750K service specs, total of 3.7 qts. includes 2.1 qts. in the oil tank and 1.6 qts. as residual in the engine. You would be correct in your assumption of addition of remainder of oil after engine startup...

According to the owner's manual, after draining the tank, sump and oil filter housing, add 3 quarts to the tank. Run the engine and and then top off accordingly.

Hope this helps.

Be careful to not succumb to the temptation of overfilling based on perceived level! If you drained the tank, pan, AND lines, you might get 3.7 qts in, but you always have some residual. If you overfill it, the excess will come shooting out the vent and cap, dousing your pant leg completely, not to mention your rear tire! Talk about a wild ride!
Ditto on the suggestions- fill it to the proper level, start it, maybe ride it some, then check it again WARM and refill to the proper level.

It's not uncommon for oil to drain back down into the sump after the bike has been sitting, the check valve in the oil pump assembly might not seat closed all the way. It might be a good idea to always check your oil level immediately after shutting down the engine to make sure you're getting an accurate reading. Otherwise, you think it is low and add oil leading to overful condition.
