Ignition switch relocation
« on: September 16, 2005, 09:48:04 AM »
Hello again.

I am looking at the possibility of relocating my ignition from the front left frame (under the tank) to the handlebars near the instrument panel.  Has anyone done this, and is there anything I should know that might influence my decision?

I just find the stock location to be very inconvenient.

Take a look on ebay.  The kits for moving the ignition switch come up from time to time.  If you do this and don't want the old ignition switch bracket, let me know.  I've converted a few back to original and could always use an extra bracket.

I don't think their would be anything special abot moving an ign. switch.
Just make sure you solder and heat shrink all electrical connections.

the ignition on my bike was relocated in this fashion when i bought it. keep in mind that since you're mounting it on the frontend of the bike, the wires will have to bend and flex when you turn the handlebars. here are the problems i have had with the setup:

the wires have been abraded by vibrating and rubbing against the front edge of the gas tank (in the center where the arch is). and, no, my bike doesn't vibrate excessively. it has not yet worn through as i have proactively wrapped electrical tape over this "high-traffic" area. i check it often and replace the tape when i see that it is down to one or two layers.

i have also had one wire come un-soldered from the back of the ignition. this was a PITA to fix.

if you have anything attached to your ignition key (split ring, key fob, house key, etc.) it'll rattle and buzz obnoxiously on long trips because it isn't allowed to dangle free as in the frame-mount setup.

upward-facing ignition more likely to acquire water in it. mine came with a chrome cap on a hinge to protect the ignition when they key isn't in it... so the cap and hinge rusted instead. great.

all-in-all, having the key here has been a pain in the butt rather than a convenience.

so i'm going to move it back down under the tank onto the frame as soon as i get a Round Tuit. and some parts.

I agree with Jenni------>

My bike has the ign. switch where U want to mount yours , and I am not happy at all with it being their.

1.It clutters the neck of the bike up
2.chance of water getting in while key is out
3.any sort of keychain will rattle and slap all over your tank
4.Just plain out looks ugly

I plan to move mine under the frame somewhere , so it is out of view....

Mine was on top and I moved it back to the frame for the same reasons

When I got mine I also thought about relocating it, but what's wrong with the frame location? You only need it for starting and stopping. The handlebar switch makes sense when it have the fork lock combined. For example, the V-Rod have it on the right side below the seat, so the speedo and handlebar look less cluttered. The only problem is that they fall on the exhaust and recovering the key is dangerous to say the least.

I don't plan to relocate mine, it also serves to puzzle the unwary -I'm talking from experience, when people want to stop it and don't find the key-

Good points from you all.  My 2001 Suzuki Savage also has it under the seat, but that is much less incovenient than having to stretch so far forward and reach around that tank.

I think for now I will just leave it as is.

Also, having the ignition switch in the stock location is one of those characteristics that adds to the vintage motorcycle experience.   ;D
